Weekly Assignments:  September 2011

Monday and Tuesday = Writing Workshop:  This time is for writing and 
rewriting previous drafts.  The work is directed toward completing the 
Portfolio.*  In-class time is for skills, editing practice, grammar mini-
lessons as well time for writing and editing. Students conference with the 
teacher to decide areas that are working out well and to identify  
areas in need of revision.  Student commit in the Conference to 
put in one additional hour of writing beyond the class time.  Four new pages 
of "free writing" in the Writer's Notebook are also expected week-to-week.

Wednesday through Friday = Reader's Workshop:  All areas of reading and 
working with text are explored in this time segment.  Students also write 
responses to their reading, practice analyitical skills, and make 
connections through discussion and writing.  We are currently 
reading "Tuesdays with Morrie" and are working in a unit of memoir and 
biography readings and writings.

Outside Reading Book = O.R.B.= Students are required to bring their ORB 
everyday to class.  The daily assignment is 20 minutes in school and 20 
minutes at home.  There are regualr checks and activities based on reading.


Portfolio:  Students write and rewrite and rewrite samples of their writing 
in four areas, working toward submitting their best for the year in the 
Potfolio.  The genre include:  1-autobiography/memoir                  
                               2-response to literature: critical lens
                               3-expository essay
                               4-persuasive composition
                               5-poetry sampling

Also, each student will include in the Portfolio two short reflective pieces:
                               1-My Journey as a Writer This Year
                               2-My Journey as a Reader This year
