Journals:
The students write in their journals on a regular basis. Students are
encouraged to use words from the Word Train as well as words from their
own personal dictionaries.
Spelling:
We use our spelling program to teach students word families. Each student
will receive a workbook and will take home a spelling list on Mondays. The
children will work throughout the week on different activities to
familiarize themselves with these words. By studying words within word
families (such as it in sit, fit, bit, and hit) children are able to
recognize word chunks. Once students are able to do this they will be able
to sound out larger words.
Reading:
We use the Houghton-Mifflin Theme-based Reading Program. This program
includes wonderful childrens literature with a variety of activities
designed to work on reading comprehension and skills, writing mechanics, and
creative writing. Students will also participate in independent reading.
They will have Book Bins with 5 self-selected books inside for independent
reading time. Students will keep track of the books they have read using
their Literature Log inside their Reading Folders. As the students become
better readers and writers their Literature Log sheet will change and
students will be asked to make comments about the books. Im looking for
students to make text-to-self, text-to-text, or text-to-world
connections.
Math:
The McGraw-Hill program emphasizes a hands-on approach to mathematics. Most
of the lessons are taught with manipulative and then the students use the
manipulative or pictures to complete the workbook pages. Topics covered are:
number concepts, patterns, addition, subtraction, money, measurement, place
value, geometry, fractions, problem-solving, and logic.
Science:
Themes are spiders and insects, the 5 senses, magnets, force, properties,
animals, weather, plants, earthworms, and pond life. Science is integrated
throughout the day with hands on activities, art projects, and an occasional
video. We will also use a prepared Science Kits from BOCES.
Health:
We will learn about dental health and healthy hearts. We will also learn
personal safety, nutrition, and how to protect ourselves against germs.
Social Studies:
Areas that are introduced are feelings, family, community, Native Americans,
holiday customs, safety, and map skills. This is taught through story books,
hands on activities, our new Social Studies books and field trips.
Computer Lab:
The children will do some writing on the computers, play educational games,
and visit educational websites. Any websites we use can be found on my
website under the Links webpage.
