Book Bags

Please read the paragraph that corresponds to the time of year.

FALL

Each week your child will be taking home a book bag with a weekly sight word (some weeks there will be 2 sight words). Your child will also have a little red sight word book to go along with the weekly sight word (s). Please keep the paper sight words at home. They are for you to review with your child. Many parents put them on a ring and use them like flash cards. You can cut them out, rewrite them on index cards or hang them up on the walls. Please have your child read them to you at least once a day! Some of the words can be "sounded out" others will have to be memorized. The little red sight word book should also be read each night. Check to make sure that your child is pointing to each word as he/she reads. This year we will also be sending home a white paper sight word book. The paper book is your child's to keep! They were purchase with money granted to the kindergarten by the PTO! Please keep these special little books in a safe accessible place!   Encourage your child to revisit them often!

WINTER

Mid year the children will be selecting a "Just Right Reader" from our leveled library. This will be in addition to the weekly little red sight word book. Please have your child read the books frequently to you over the week. BOOK   BAGS   SHOULD   BE   RETURNED   TO   SCHOOL   BY   FRIDAY. A reading log will be in the book bag, as well. Each week, please record the "Just Right Reader" title on the reading log. This will enable me guide your child on his/her book selection. PLEASE   KEEP   THE   READING   LOG   IN   THE   BOOK   BAG!

SPRING

In the spring the children will be selecting 2 "Just Right Readers" per week. The books will be selected by the children each Monday. Please record the book titles on the reading log and read 1-2 of the books each night with your child. Help him/her identify high frequency words, use picture clues and sound out new words. Each book should be read at least 3 times during the week. Rereading books helps to build fluency and confidence. PLEASE   SEND   THE   BOOK   BAGGIES   INTO   SCHOOL   EACH   DAY. During this time of year the children read their "Just Right Readers" during Reader's Workshop.

Our goal in kindergarten is to help your child feel like a reader by doing what readers do. If you find that your child is getting frustrated with the reading, please do not hesitate to contact me! We have books for children at all reading levels!
