What do ESL, ELL and LEP mean?

ESL = English as a Second Language (refers to the subject or
                                    teacher)
ELL = English Language Learner     (refers to the student)
LEP = Limited English Proficient   (refers to the student)

What is ESL?

ESL is an academic discipline designed to allow student to 
acquire English language proficiency across the major skill areas 
of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and critical thinking 
in a systematic and spiraling fashion.  ESL services necessarily 
encompass academic areas of science, math and social studies 
along with English language arts.

What is the goal of the Carmel ESL program?

The goal of the Carmel ESL Program is to provide English language 
learners (ELLs) with instruction to become proficient speakers, 
listeners, readers and writers in English in order to meet the 
State academic standards, as well as to acquire the social 
language to help them acculturate comfortably into American life.
