Welcome to Menands School on behalf of the English as a Second Language [ESL] program.  Parents of students who are English language learners have been notified of their child's eligibility into the ESL program, based upon their child's performance on the New York State Language Assessment Battery-Revised [LAB-R] if they are new to the school. This assessment demonstrates the child's language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing English at their grade level.

English language assessments are conducted annually to help measure students' progress towards language proficiency.  Parents of ESL students who take the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test [NYSESLAT] are sent results of their child's performance, as well as their child's instructional level:  beginning, intermediate or advanced, at the beginning of the next school year.  Students who demonstrate proficiency in English in all areas [speaking, listening, reading and writing] test out, thus,"graduating" from the ESL program.

Languages spoken at Menands School this year include Arabic, Chinese, French, Gujarati, Hindi, Lingala, Malayalam, Nyanja, Spanish, Tamil, Tagalog and Telugu!

The Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing sessions of the NYSESLAT have now been administered for the 2010/2011 school year.  Menands School will be sent students' test results during the summer.  More information about the annual NYSESLAT is available on the New York State Education Department's web site http://emsc.nysed.gov/osa/nyseslat/

We wish students a successful conclusion to the school year.  Parents can encourage their children to do their best on all assignments.  Feel free to email me regarding particular questions or concerns [or to schedule a conference] at:  rbartlett@menands.org
