English 8 with Mr. Smead

This year in English, we will be exploring the relationship between respect
and responsibility. Each quarter, we'll be using a set of questions to guide
us toward a greater understanding of how we balance our obligations to
ourselves and to others. Here's a sample of the questions we'll be asking and
answering:

- What does it mean to have a voice?
- How do people develop a voice?
- How do people use their voice?
- Is education a right or a privilege?
- It is more important to advocate for yourself or for your community?
- Should citizens be held accountable only for their own actions?

What you'll need
Every day in class, you should bring:
- Your English binder with enough loose leaf to take notes;
- A pen or pencil that is ready to write notes;
- The literature we are studying in class.

What you'll need to know
It's all about respect. You'll be expected to care about the classroom
environment, meaning the room and the people in it. You should get used to,
if you're not already, being an engaged listener and a team player. In short,
you'll have a great experience if you keep this in mind: everyone matters,
everyone cares, everyone learns!
