A Parent's Guide to Raising a Reader

"The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for
eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children."

1.Make reading fun!
2.Read to your child EVERY day!
3.Be a reader yourself and model good reading habits.
4.Visit the library frequently. Get your child a library card.
5.Provide books that your child will enjoy and can read with ease.
6.Encourage your child to read to you, but don't expect word perfect accuracy.
   Make sure what he/she reads makes sense.
7.Before reading a book, encourage your child to look at the pictures and make
   predictions.
8.When your child encounters a challenging word, encourage him to:
* Use the picture and letter clues,
* Substitute a word that would make sense,
* Skip the word and read on, and/or
* Reread the sentence again.
9.Afterwards, talk about the story. What are your reactions to the story?
  What connections can you make?
