What am I encouraged to bring to school?
August 2011
Dear Fifth Grader and Family,
Hello ! I hope you are having a wonderful summer and are getting ready
for an exciting and challenging school year. I have many new and interesting
activities planned for you.
School supplies you are encouraged to bring by September 8th are:
* homework folder or bag ( avoid “luggage” style backpacks
as our closets cannot accommodate them easily)
* one (plain white) t-shirt
* two marble composition books, one pack lined looseleaf
(with holes)
* one pack index tabs, one 8oz. Elmer’s glue, scissors,
ruler ( in./ cm.), pencil sharpener
* many sharpened pencils with erasers, highlighter, dry erase
marker
* two glass baby food jars with lids (any size)
( Please label all of the above items with your initials)
I look forward to working with you and having a productive and fun school
year. In the meantime, enjoy those last days of summer.
See you on the first day!
Sincerely,
Ms. Charos
What's for homework?
5th grade classroom homework is located on your Monthly Homework/Activity
Calendar. A hard
copy, along with any corresponding worksheets, goes home at the beginning of
the month with
each
child. Extra copies of the Homework Calendar are available in the classroom
on our "Class
News"
Bulletin Board. The due dates of the assignments will also be posted on this
site. In addition,
"what's
due" updates are given at our classroom Team Meetings where the children also
have an
opportunity
to ask any homework questions that may arise. Homework is accepted early but
must be handed
in(
in its entirety - all parts and pieces) by the due date for full credit.
Do children have to read outside of school?
YES! YES! YES!.....The children are required to read approximately 1 1/2
hrs. per week ( approx. 60+ pages) from their "Choice Book" ( which needs to be
approved by me at the beginning of the month). The time can be divided any
way they wish, although, I would prefer most of the reading to be done over the
weekend since the children will be asked to respond (in journals) to their
reading ,in class, on Mondays. Children need to bring their book to
school on Mondays for reference while responding.
What about spelling words/homework?
Weekly spelling literacy activities are posted on the Monthly Calendar
under "Weekly Reminders.". New weekly CORE and CONTENT words are given to
the children at the beginning of the week during a "preview." Those words
are listed in
their Word Study/Homework books and are posted weekly on this site. Spelling
literacy
(ELA) activities and lessons are a focus throughout the week.
How can I get homework ( done on my home computer) to Ms. Charos at school?
If you don't have access to a printer, feel free to e-mail it with an
attachment to me at:
kcharos@quogueschool.com Be sure to save it as an RTF file first. You can
also put the file on
a
"zip" drive or "travel" drive and bring that to school. I'd be happy to print
it for you. As a last
resort...... you might have to do it the "old-fashioned" way, hand write it
on a piece
of paper!
