Hello to All!
I had wanted to be a teacher since I was in the second grade.
I am now fulfilling my dream! I have been teaching at the Quogue
School since 1992.
In the past, I have been fortunate to work with children in 2nd
grade and primary special needs classes. I am certified to work with
children in many areas and hold an AA in Early Childhood Ed., a
BA in Psychology, Elementary and Special Education, as well as, an MA
in Reading.
This year I hope that I can encourage the children to continue
to grow and enjoy reading by exposing them to various genres
of literature, many of which will be integrated with other parts of
the curriculum. Children learn about their language when they
put their language to good use...that will be the focus of our
Writer's Workshop...learning basic skills (grammar, punctuation)
through meaningful language experiences ( creative writing
pieces, poetry, research reports, reading responses) collected
in individual portfolios.
In 5th grade math, my main goal for the children, is to
answer the question " When will I ever have to use this in life?"
Many of us have wondered about the need to use a particular
concept or skill. By using projects and performance tasks, I can
respond to the childrens' need for "Meaningful Math" learning
experiences.
In the content areas of Science and Social Studies, we will focus on
the
integration of reading skill development ("reading to learn") and project-
based units of study. The children will be engaged in meaningful historical
and scientific projects that will stimulate interest and curiosity as well
as
encourage critical thinking.
I am looking forward to making this year one of growth and
significance for the children I am working with in 5th grade.
