September 2008 Science 7/8 Mr. Hidy
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students:
Welcome to Life Science (7th grade) or Physical Science (8th Grade). I'm
looking forward to our year together. In order to make this year as
successful as possible, we will follow the guidelines listed below:

1. Each Student will be required to have a three ring binder (1.5” or larger,
2” is recommended), a composition note book (the traditional black and white
marbled kind are preferred), pencils and pens every day for this class. 7th
graders will also need colored pencils (when requested) on specific days.
These will not be needed until the second unit. I will remind students after
the first exam.

2. Table of contents will be handed out to students the week of September 10,
on which the students will fill out and keep a continuous log of labs,
quizzes, hand outs and assignments. Parents can, at any time, check their
child’s progress by examination of their binder/notebook.

Homework (20%):
Homework will be assigned on various days (often daily), and turned in the
students folder the following day. Students are expected to keep all
completed homework assignments in their notebooks. These assignments should
be clearly labeled (with a page number I assign) and arranged in order.
Quizzes (25%):
Quizzes will be short and not always announced in advance. Sometimes homework
will be collected and graded as a quiz, or there may be short questions given
in class for the quiz. Again, these quizzes are to be kept in the student's
notebook.
Labs (25%)
Labs are usually once or twice a week and require specific safety procedures.
These are outlined a separate “lab safety” document. Lab write-ups/post-labs
are considered homework but are graded separately.
Tests (30%)
Tests will be given at the end of each unit and will last the entire class
period. Any test missed, due to a legal absence, must be made up within two
days of the student's return to class. Students who missed any test due to
cutting class or illegal absence will earn a grade of zero for that test
Other grades:
Notebooks will count as two quiz grades, with organization, neatness and
completion being the key elements.

Marking Period Grade will be a simple average of all assignments in a category
multiplied by the % value for the category (homework – 20%, labs – 25%,
quizzes – 25%, tests – 30%.) (This can be calculated by the students as an on
going process since they will have a record of their grades in their
binder/notebook. TESTS, QUIZZES, CLASSWORK, HOMEWORK, AND LABS will figure
into the grade. Failure to complete homework assignments will reduce your
marking period points and therefore lower your grade.

FINAL EXAMS: For 7th graders, there will be a final exam! This will count as
a portion of your overall grade for the year (33.3%). If you have maintained
a 95.0% or better grade for the first 37 weeks, you are exempt from the final
exam. In other words, the final is OPTIONAL! If you choose to take it, you
may still improve your grade!
For 8th graders, the State Assessment will be in place of a final exam. Since
your grade will not be available until after then end of the school year it
will NOT count towards your overall average. Therefore a final research
project will be assigned after the state exam and that will count as your
final exam grade (33.3%)

Communication:
WEB PAGE: This is up and running. I am posting information in a calendar
format for each grade (one for 7th and one for 8th). I am also post homework,
reading, lab write-up due dates, exams, etc.
E-MAIL: My e-mail is bhidy@skanschools.org; policy is that I must respond
within 2 school days to your e-mails. I will do my best to respond in half
that time.

Attendance and Preparation
Regular attendance, arriving on time for class and being prepared (with
pen/pencil and your binder/notebook) for class is absolutely necessary for
success in this course.

Suggestions for Success
1. Keep your notebook up to date. An organized notebook will prove to be a
valuable resource at test time and after the class is over.
2. Attend classes regularly, be on time, and be prepared, if you know you will
be out for any extended period of time feel free to call the school through
the Main Office switch board 291-2245 and ask to be connected to Mr. Hidy’s
Room m126 for assignments and make up work. I will have hand outs and notes
available for any missed work.
3. Set up a regular study time for science, preferably as soon as possible
after class. At this time, the explanations from the class will be freshest in
your mind. Also try and set up a study partner or at least some one from class
that can keep you up to date if you do not get the daily assignment.
4. Ask questions during class and after school. Do not let all your questions
build up until you are overwhelmed. I enjoy lots of interaction in class. Put
an asterisk by any question that does not get answered in class, and ask me
after class or during your lab period, I have been also known to go to the
cafeteria to help students during lunch or have students in my room during
this time.
5. Use the help that is available. See me during my free time during the day
or after school. Ask your classmates for assistance. Do not think that you
need to tough it out on your own.
6. A good attitude will make a huge difference!
