I've been in the Spackenkill School District for quite some time. Last
February, I was honored to receive a Lifetime Memebership from the District
PTA, so I've been around the block a few times. As a matter of fact, I even
went to kindergarten in Spackenkill at the Martha Lawrence School. Maybe some
of you went to Hagan while my mother was a kindergarten, 2nd or 4th grade
teacher here in the 1970's and 1980's. I even did my student teaching at
Nassau Elementary. I was hired in 1987; the same year as Dr. Sicina. I taught
in 2nd grade for my first four years. I have been in Room 15 teaching and
loving 4th grade ever since.
I also have a great time coaching girls' basketball at St. Martin's CYO.
I really enjoy working with the kids and I like to be involved in the events
that are taking place in our schools and in the community.
I'm also a huge New York Mets and New York Jets fan. Don't fret if
you're a Yankee or Giants fan. Last year, my class was 95% Yankee fans so I
am quite used to dealing with that. Why all the sports talk? You might as
well get used to it. We talk a lot about current events in class and sports
is one that many students and this teacher love to discuss.
I guess my philosophy can be equated to the ancient proverb that states;
"Tell me and I will forget;
Show me and I may not remember;
Involve me and I will understand."
It is my goal to get my students to become independent learners. I want
to teach students how to help themselves. I want my students to learn "how to
learn". It is also extremely important that we enjoy our fourth grade
experience. We concentrate on a lot of Local History in 4th Grade and I
think that is awesome. I want students to become engaged and excited about
all of their learning. Especially learning about all the historic events that
have happpened and are continuing to happen right here in our own backyards.
I believe that our learning here will be more enjoyable and permanent if we
invest a genuine and spirited effort to all of our lessons and activities.
I love teaching fourth grade and I want my students to love being in
fourth grade!
