Review for the boards with MKSAP/Harrison's
*Continue to review Johns Hopkin's Ambulatory Care online modules
Keep up to date by: reading NEJM weekly
using UpToDate/PubMed or similar resources
Create a list of topics that I feel I need to study in an evidence
based fashion, including basic pathophysiology,
molecular biology/genetics:
*Take the In-Training Exam and review results
If not done previously, pass Step 3 of the USMLE exam
Review the ABIM list of topics that will be on the board exam:

2. Communication Skills
Use non-directive, empathetic, culturally sensitive questions
with patients and families [engage the families]
Prepare for end-of-life issues, communicating with the elderly,
adolescents, patients from other cultures or who don't speak
English

procedures (skin biopsy) and examination of the female (perhaps
with standardized patients)
Review charts of interns/students for history/physical that is well
organized with a useful social history that includes data from
families, old record, and includes pap/pelvic, advance directives,
and a thoughtful assessment and plan that has been discussed with
the attending
Improve skills of informed consent, negotiating treatment plans
Care for patients in a nursing home by performing consultations and/or
seeing patients for primary care visit
4. Professionalism
Compassion, empathy, respect for patients at all times
*Show commitment to continuous professional development by attending
required conferences such as Grand Rounds, and preparing a summary for
colleagues
*Show altruism by participating in a Community Service Activity
*Review vignettes (stories) regarding cultural sensitivity with
interns
For extra credit, write a paper on the ethical issues regarding
one of the following:
-accepting gifts from pharmaceutical representatives
-accepting research funding from the pharmaceutical industry
-ending life support
5. Practice-based learning and improvement
Keep list of patients/chart numbers/illnesses (with safeguards for
confidentiality) for both inpatient and ambulatory setting
Generate a project to improve care of your patients, such as making
certain that appropriate preventive measures have been taken and
that clinical practice guidelines are being followed
What can you do to decrease the liklihood of errors? List errors
you have made.

Know the following: NCQI, JCAHO, OSHA, CMS, NYS-DOH, Bell, HIPPA,
MCO, VNS, ICD, CPT, ABIM-ASIM, MSSNY, AMA, Medicare, Medicaid, LS/MFT.
