Finding a Job & Passing the Boards
Only permanent residents or US Citizens can go on T32 or other NIH grants.
Fellowships can choose to take J1 or HIb but they would have to pay for them
from funds other than T32 or NIH grants; NIH doesn't care if fellowship has
these folks or not only that they not be put on grants.
Two years ago I began a preparation for fellowship application course for
our
residents. The Chief Residents and I compiled a handbook, "The Hitchhiker's
Guide to a Medical Career" outlining components of the process - writing a
professional CV, writing an effective personal statement and interviewing
skills. The Guide was supported by a series of three workshops focused on
these three areas. As follow up, I reviewed CV's and personal statements
for
any of the residents who requested help and worked with them on their
writing
skills. Finally, with the help of several experienced interviewers, we
arranged for "mock interviews" - 15 minute interviews followed by 15 minutes
of feedback. The Chiefs also organized a Career Fair where all of the
subspecialty fellowship directors were available to discuss their
specialties
and the application process. After the first course, we collected data and,
not surprisingly, the residents found it very helpful. Residents success in
th!
e match also improved significantly. The Hitchhiker's Guide is in the
process of revision and I'm leaving my current position but if there is
sufficient interest, I will submit it as an APDIM workshop for the next
meeting.

Dave Battinelli and I have done a workshop at the ACP Annual session each
year for resident members of the ACP on fellowship applications - we could
conduct the session for PD's as well...Dave what do you think? Is there
enough of an interest in this topic among program directors?

There is a nice chapter in the Program Director's Manual (APDIM) on the
fellowship process with multiple web references and a timetable.

There are also a number of excellent documents, links, and resources
available on the ACP website under the residents/students section. Dr. Pat
Alguire has a nice general summary of fellowship application tips. The ACP
education section has done us the service of collecting and posting
information on GIM fellowships, women's health fellowships, and other
options
for continuing education. They have an online career center that also has
great sections regarding CVs, interviews, applying for practice positions,
etc.

Passing the Boards
The "secret" to passing the ABIM Board Certifying Examination in Internal
Medicine includes the following:
1. Review the topics that the ABIM presents.
2. Start reviewing MKSAP in the PGY-1 year, and review it a few times before
concluding residency training. Use the two volume Harrison's in
conjunction with MKSAP. (You can skip the Neurology sections that far
exceed what an internist needs to know.)
3. MedStudy is useful in addition to MKSAP and Harrison's (but not instead
of MKSAP and Harrison's).
4. Current Practice is a wonderful text for the busy practioner, but it
is not a board review text (nor is the Washington Manual)!
5. Board Review courses may give you a sense of security, and they may be
helpful in identifying to you areas in which you could use additional
study, but they will not fill in gaps in your knowledge.
6. Complete the Johns Hopkins ILC and other online modules that are part of
the curriculum each month.
With the above in mind, board review opportunities include the following:
Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Annual Update and
Intensive Review of Internal Medicine (usually a 1 week course in
late July-early August)
From July 31-August 6, 2005, Columbia University (w/ Beth Israel Deaconess
of Harvard-Boston)
will be offering its "Annual Update and Intensive Review of Internal
Medicine" at the
Roosevelt Hotel in NYC. Information and registration materials are
available at the
link above. If you have been attending our Grand Rounds, you will recognize
some of
the speakers (such as Drs. Jay Dobkin, Ira Goldberg, John Bilezikian, James
Reiffel)
Cornell also offers a review course, although not at as convenient a time:
