Reading

We will normally be covering one story a week.  Exceptions to this 
may be during holiday weeks.
          Book 1   Unit I

The theme of this unit is What's New?  Each of the five 
stories relates to the unit theme. 

Week 1- Ann's First Day - A girl in a new school makes friends with 
the help of her pet rabbit.  

Spelling words: short vowels

Week 2- Henry and Mudge- a boy's dog helps him gain self-confidence.

Week 3 Luka's Quilt - A girl and her grandmother learn to 
compromise.

Week 4 - The Roundup at Rio Ranch - A boy solves a problem and saves 
an animal.

Week 5 - Time for Kids Article Welcome to a New Museum- A new museum 
is dedicated to the history and ideas of African Americans.  

Spelling words:  words beginning with p, s, t

Study skills for this unit include a title page, a contents page, 
reading a glossary, and using the internet.

Each theme is followed by a unit test.

Unit II

Theme- Just Between Us:  Family and friends help us see the world in 
many ways.

Stories in this unit:

Lemonade for Sale - Children discover how to combine friendship and 
business.

A Letter to Amy - A boy sends a special invitation to his special 
friend.

The Best Friends Club - A girl learns to share a friendship.
