What is ESL?

ESL is English as a Second Lanuage. ESL class focuses on 
developing learning strategies that help social and academic
English. Language instruction includes reading, writing,
listening and speaking and focusing on literature and grammar.

How do I enter the ESL program?

English as a Second Language classes are for students whose first 
language is not English. When you first come to school, you will
be given a test called the LAB-R. There is a reading, writing,
listening and speaking section. This helps determine if you need
ESL classes.

How do I exit the ESL program?

To exit the ESL program, you must score Proficient on all areas 
of the NYSESLAT (New York State English as Second Language
Assessment Test. This test is given in May every year.

How long does it take to learn English?

How long it takes to learn depends on the person!  Don't worry - 
everyone learns at a different pace. There are two types of
English that are learned. The first is conversational English
and the second is academic English. Academic English is needed
to read grade level textbooks.
