WELCOME TO THE UNQUA ORCHESTRA WEBSITE!

CLUB NEWS:
Yes! We are able to offer Chamber Orchestra Club this year! Students who
enrolled in the Chamber Club will be receiveing letters before the weekend.
Our first meeting will be Thursday, October 2nd at 8:00am. Since this club
runs from 8:00 to 8:40, students are permitted to go to extra help in their
classrooms IF extra help is being offered. If students have no place to go,
they MUST stay with me until 9:15am.

Please remember that 4th Grade REHEARSALS will not begin until the week of
October 28th. The notice and the attendance policy will be sent home no less
than a week before the first rehearsal. 4th grade REHEARSALS will always be
Tuesday mornings at 8:15am.PLEASE REMEMBER THAT REHEARSALS ARE A MANDATORY
PART OF THE INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM!
THE INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM IS A GRADED REPORT CARD SUBJECT, and rehearsals are
in addition to the weekly lessons.

ALL STUDENTS in 4th grade need to have "Strictly Strings Book 1" for their
instrument and a folder.
ALL STUDENTS in grades 5 and 6 NEED to come to lessons with their music in a
FOLDER, their lesson book and their instrument every week.

No metronome at home? Have the old tuner? Go to:

This site not only talks about using a metronome, but actually IS a working
metronome ONLINE! Click on a tempo and you'll hear the beat! If you practice
near a computer and haven't been able to purchase the new Korg tuner and
metronome combo (or you already own the old Korg black tuner), this site can
me very useful when practicing! Here's an example of how to use a metronome
when practicing"
Let's say you have trouble playing the third line of "Song Of Brotherhood".
We play the song at quarter note equals 120 (which means when the metronome
is set at 120, each "click" is one quarter note). Practice the "hard part"
at a slower tempo like perhaps quarter note equals 80. WHEN YOU CAN PLAY
THE "HARD PART" EASILY AND STEADILY AT 80, THEN TRY IT AGAIN AT 90! When you
can play it well at 90, try it at 100......keep bumping the tempo up until
you can play the "hard part" at the same tempo as the rest of the song (in
this case 120). DO NOT make the metronome faster until you MASTER the
section at the slower tempo!
* I do not recommend tuning to the "A" on the site as the pitch is a bit
funny....

I've heard that several music stores have sold out of our lesson books. If
you are unsure about what book to purchase, please go to the "Lesson
Book/Tuner" link from the home page. If you click on the title you will see
a picture of the book.

PLEASE PLEASE be sure to turn in a practice chart at every lesson! Practice
charts are worth 25% of the report card grade! If you forget to take a new
chart from my room, either print one from the website or write the minutes
practiced, student's name and parent's signature on ANY piece of paper! If
you are afraid of losing the chart, keep it in the INSTRUMENT CASE!

If for any reason you open the case and something does not look right,
PLEASE don't try and fix it yourself! Either send it in to me ANY day of the
school week or bring it straight to where you rented it from. Often, things
look broken but are not. I can "fix" most things within seconds! If it is a
true repair, I will let you know exactly what needs to be done.

MAGNET:
Since the magnet program is in our own school, all lessons have been
scheduled to AVOID magnet days.

ELECTIONIC TUNERS:
The Korg TM-40 is the specific tuner I require for 5th and 6th grade
students. It costs slightly more than other tunes, but is worth the money
because of the dual function: it has the tuner function as well as a
metronome function. It does cost less than if the tuner and metronome were
purchased separately. This tuner is easy to use, takes AAA batteries, and
will last a lifetime! Please see the "Lesson Book/Tuner" link from the home
page for a photo of this tuner.
This tuner can be purchased from any local music store that is an authorized
Korg dealer.
