What is multiage?

The multiage program has been at Van Schaick for 14 years. It is a unique
program that best provides an environment for children to learn at their
instructional level. Previous to the implementation of the multiage program,
testing results showed that the reading needs were not being met for our
students in a single teacher classroom. Our program was modeled
after the multiage school in Lake George, NY. Our teaching staff worked
closely for an entire year with the teachers at Lake George Elementary
School. This school was comprised of all multiage classrooms from grade 1 to
grade 6. Our goal was to develop an instructional program that would fit the
needs of our students. With this in mind, our reading groups are based on a
flexible grouping pattern where students are instructed at their
instructional learning level. Since implementing the flexible grouping
program our test scores have continued to rise in the area of reading. We
are very proud of this program and continue to remain up to date on all best
practices for reading to ensure that your child is receiving the best
reading and writingvinstruction possible. We consider all of the students
in multiage as one big class.

What does a typical day look like in a multiage classroom?

Students arrive at school and report to their homeroom teacher. This
teacher is responsible for attendance, housing student belongings, and
preparing students for the day. These homerooms consist of both first and
second grade students based on their reading level. At 11:30 students are
then divided into first and second grade so that they may all receive grade
level curriculum in phonics, math, vocabulary, social studies, science,
physical education, music, and art. At 2:30 students report back to their
homeroom/reading teacher so that they may pack up their things and be
dismissed to their parent/guardian.

What is the behavior management system in multiage?

Students are constantly being praised and rewarded in all of the multiage
classrooms. They may be recognized by receiving stickers, "smarties",
treasure coupons, helping the teacher, as well as many other ways. Students
who need a reminder on following the school rules will have to change their
card from green to blue. If they need another reminder they may need to
change their card from blue to yellow. If they must be spoken to again they
will put their card on red and they will lose their math tool time for that
day. If they need to be spoken to a third time they will be sent to the
Principal's office and a referral will be put into the office.
