Here at Vassar Road Elementary School character education has a prominent role in the lives of the students. Through a unique character education program, students engage in a multitude of activities to promote acts of kindness, good citizenship and tasks that develop skills and strategies to become good problem solvers. All students will recognize the worth, quality, and importance of themselves, other people and their community. All students will: Respect themselves and others Value personal property Work together for the benefit of the school community Manage and control behaviors to participate as a good citizen Value and recognize individual differences Exhibit qualities of good citizenship, sportsmanship and fairness Character Education plays an important role in our school culture. The S.L.T. selected the five virtues listed below which represent virtues our K-3 students could easily understand and assimilate into their daily lives. This year’s selections include: September/October friendship November/December caring January/February respect March/April trust May/June loyalty Another part of the character education project the S.L.T. adopted is it Vassar Road STARS project. One student per class per month is nominated by the classroom teacher. Students are chosen for: displaying a good sense of citizenship and character education values (friendship caring, respect, trust, loyalty) making productive use of independent time (not associated with recess) and pursue activities connected to learning demonstrating a commitment to education through determination, focus, and responsibility for doing all assignments
