Class Material - German 7

German States Coats of Arms Project
First Quarter 2007

What? – Students will pick one of the sixteen German states and reproduce the coat of arms for
that state. They will also research facts about that state and present it to the rest of the
class.

Who? – All German 7 students.

Why? We are studying German geography, learning where the states are located in Germany and
what their characteristics are.

How? – Students will receive cardstock of different colors in the classroom to compose their
coats of arms. Students need to cut out the shapes and overlap them to create the final product.
Students may also use other media to reproduce the coats of arms. In the past students have used
wood, felt, Styrofoam boards (the ones covered with paper) and paint. Because of limited display
space in the classroom, please keep products at the maximum size of 16x11 inches.
Research. – Students can look up their states on the internet at home or at school (on their own
time). If the student does not have access to a computer, please let me know and I will provide
him/her with adequate information sources.

When? – Coats of arms are due Friday, November 9th 2007.
If projects are turned in one day late, the maximum grade will be dropped to 90%, if two days
late, 80%, if three days late, 70%. No projects will be accepted four days overdue. The students
will unfortunately receive a zero for this assignment.

How much? – This assignment is worth 100 points total. The criteria are as follows:

 30 % of points – Class presentation. Student will be asked to explain her/his product
clearly.
 The information form must be filled out and turned in to the teacher before the
presentation. Student must know the information by heart. So be prepared!!!

 20 % of points – The product shows that the students spent time working on it – it was
not “slapped together” the night before at 10:00 pm.

 20% of points – The product shows care. Not all of us are artists!! However, everybody
can tell when a project was made with care.

 20% of points – Use of correct colors and symbols.

 10% of points – Including a means for displaying the product in the classroom walls. For
example: hooks, Velcro dots, cords, etc.

Have fun and work hard. You will be happy to have done a good job!
