How can I find out about upcoming events?

Because so many things will be happening throughout the year, I will keep
you updated through a “monthly letter”. This letter will come home at the
beginning of each month. It will also be posted on this web page. Be sure
to check your child's "Take Home" Folder each day, read the assignment pads

Will homework be assigned?

Yes! Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday nights. On Fridays, parents
are asked to write a response in their child's "Nothing Books".

There are many reasons for assigning homework. First of all, homework is a
valuable tool. It helps students make the most of their experience in
school. It is a way of giving students the opportunity to demonstrate master
of a skill or understanding of a concept. Homework reinforces what has been
learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches
responsibility and helps students develop positive study habits. Homework is
not only an extension of our classroom's approach to learning but assignments
also serve as informal assessment tools.

What types of assignments are given?

Homework assignments will include word study activities, math, social studies
or science pages, thinking, reading or writing assignments and studying for
upcoming tests. There are daily activities and long term projects. Some
homework is assigned for the entire class while other assignments are made in
recognition of individual needs, interests and abilities. Students should
practice math facts daily and read for their reading logs. They are required
to complete at least 25 books this year.

What are the parent’s responsibilities with homework?

Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their
children. Therefore, I ask that you make homework a top priority, provide
necessary supplies and a quiet environment, set aside a specific time when
homework should be done and provide praise and support when homework is
completed. Furthermore, parents need to initial or sign the assignment pad
each day and check their “Nothing Books” every weekend. Hopefully, this will
instill responsibility in your child and ensure that each assignment is being
checked.

What is the "Nothing Book"?

The "Nothing Book" is an on going journal you will keep with your child from
the first week of school. Your child will write a weekly letter explaining
what was learned in school that week, share exciting information and give
reminders about upcoming events. It is also a place for them to express
personal thoughts, questions, hopes and dreams. Then the parent will write
back to the child, continuing the correspondence throughout the year. It is
a fun way for a child and parent to share experiences.
