Welcome to the Mildred E. Strang Middle School! This is a great place. Our
staff members are proud to work collaboratively with their colleagues, teams,
departments, teacher coordinators and building administrators to provide
outstanding instructional programs and to share many wonderful educational
experiences with our students, parent/guardians and school community.
Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 at Mildred E. Strang Middle School will be able
to enjoy exciting academic and extra-curricular opportunities, to discover
new interests and skills, and to make new friends and acquaintances each
year. Our school is named after Mildred E. Strang who was a teacher,
principal and chief administrator of the Yorktown School System.
The Strang family originally settled here in the 1720's and Mildred was born
in 1904. Ms. Strang grew up in Yorktown when it was mainly farms and a very
small town. The Strang Middle School was named after her when it opened in
1969, just upon her retirement after 40 years in the Yorktown Schools. Her
portrait is in the Library. Miss Strang died in 1974. Staff members and
former students remember her for her sense of humor, warm heart, hard work,
tough talk, high standards and her interest in each student and adult as an
individual. She was quite a person!
Our school was built specifically for middle school students and currently we
are home to more than 1000 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students.
We provide a comprehensive program including the standard academics, two
years of French, Spanish or Italian, art, health, home and career skills,
technology, music, and physical education. Also offered are over 30 after-
school activities, band, orchestra and chorus. Mildred E. Strang Middle
School has a Library/Media center, TV studio, a technology center, art studio
complex, swimming pool, and gymnasium. A professional and support staff of
approximately 145 individuals and 3 building administrators provide a middle
level school experience specifically addressing the needs of early
adolescents- our “tween-agers.”
The mission of the Yorktown Central School District and Mildred E. Strang
Middle School is to provide a comprehensive educational experience and to
provide the opportunities for all of our students to do their very best.
We will strive to achieve our goals by:
• Teaching students the skills, knowledge, and values to become
responsible, productive contributors to our school and society.
• Ensuring a safe and nurturing environment that promotes higher level
thinking, communication, and creativity.
• Challenging our students to achieve personal and academic excellence.
• Promoting respect for oneself and others, and the understanding of
individual differences.
• Fostering communication between MESMS staff, students and families.
• Helping everyone to "Be Safe, Be Responsible and Be Respectful" at
MESMS.
