Kindergarten:
We are enjoying studying the wonderful children's book author, Cynthia Rylant. Her
beautiful language makes us feel so close to her stories. Soon, we will learn more
about her life. Now we are enjoying her books as we share some wonderful stories:
The Relatives Came, The Great Gracie Chase and the Poppleton series.
Click here for more information about Cynthia Rylant.
April 2008
First Grade:
April is National Poetry Month, and although we love to read poetry throughout the year, what
better time to celebrate the wonderful variety of poems in the Mohansic Library?! We shared
several in the library, including a beautiful edition of "The Moon" by Robert Louis Stevenson,
illustrated by last month's visiting author, Tracey Campbell Pearson. We also continued to
explore the Chapter Book section of our library. Students are so excited about their favorite
series characters and learning about even more titles we have new this year!
Kindergarten:
Kindergarten classes enjoyed poems by Jack Prelutsky, Myra Cohn Livingston, Shel Silverstein,
Georgia Heard, Jane Yolen and Mary Ann Hoberman. Each student decorated a "pocket" in which to
carry a favorite poem, in order to share with friends and family. And kindergartners know where
the poems can be found in the library: in the 811's of course!
March 2008
Second Grade:
Second graders enjoyed a visit from author/illustrator Peter Catalanotto. Mr. Catalanotto
showed us how to take our own experience and build it into a story, just by wondering "What
If?..." He showed us how to use a "mistake" to make our illustrations better and a cool
technique to use our erasers to draw! Look for pictures to be posted soon on our PHOTOS page
of this amazingly talented artist and writer!
Kindergarten:
Kindergartners are learning about non-fiction books and how to navigate the Non-Fiction section
in the Mohansic Library. Very shortly, students will be ready to browse the shelves and select
non-fiction books to borrow, in addition to picture books. Parents will receive a note home
shortly explaining what to expect.
February 2008
Second Grade:
2KY - Learning about Harriet Tubman, we tried the
Underground Railroad Quest
to see if we could have taken the journey of a slave struggling to gain freedom.
Second Grade is preparing for a visit from author/illustrator Peter Catalanotto in
March!
First Grade:
1JBS - As part of an author study, Mrs. Saldutti's first grade class worked on a writing project
to apply what we learned about how Jan Brett uses border art to help tell her story
and side illustrations that help us predict what will happen. Click
here to view the presentation.
(Windows Media Player is required)
First Grade is preparing for a visit from author/illustrator Tracey Campbell Pearson in
March! We are reading her books and enjoying the fun stories and wonderful illustrations.
Check out her website for coloring pages,
bookmarks and information!
January 2008
Take a look at our Favorite Winter Books bulletin board. The all-around winners were
Alphabet Mystery by Audrey Wood and The Mitten by Jan Brett!
Kindergarten:
Kindergartners have learned how and why to use shelf markers in the library. Now they may select
their book from the shelves of the "Everybody" section. We have expanded our exploration of
A-B-C order in the library with fun activities on our new Smart Board. Look for the class
alphabet book to come home soon!
First Grade:
First graders are learning about the funny and wonderful world of Mo Willems, author of
Knuffle Bunny and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! Enter the "The pigeon wants
a..." contest at Mo Willems' website.
If you win, Mo Willems will visit Mohansic!
Jan Brett is running an author visit contest of her own, and you may enter this one online as
many times as you wish! Guess which book each illustration comes from and type in your name and
school. If you win, Jan Brett
will come to Mohansic!
Second Grade:
Second graders are becoming expert OPAC searchers! Together with classroom teachers, we are
working on many classroom projects in the library media center.
December 2007
Kindergarten:
In Kindergarten, we are exploring a number of different alphabet books. After reading several
together, we are ready to start creating our own! Each class will produce a book, which will be
added to the Mohansic Library collection. Parents: Look for a copy to circulate through the
backpack in early 2008!
First Grade:
First graders are exploring the work of the author Jan Brett. Students are so perceptive
in their noticings of this author's beautiful illustrations, and how she tells a story
through more than just her words. We explored her rich website, and learned alot about
how a writer develops an idea.
Second Grade:
Second grade is exploring the wonderful world of letter-writing. Fun to write and fun to
receive, letters are easy at Mohansic, thanks to our Mohansic Post Office, Wee Deliver.
We are reading books written in letter format and examining the parts of a friendly letter.
First and second graders are learning to become independent seekers of information in the
library. We are learning how each section of the library is organized. To find stories, we
need to know the author's last name. To find a non-fiction book, we need to know the subject,
and then we can use the library map to find it and browse the section. After the holiday break,
second graders will learn how to use the library catalog, or OPAC. We are already practicing
locating books in the picture book ("Everybody"), fiction and non-fiction sections.
All grade levels are voting for their favorite winter book to be included on the library's
bulletin board. It might be a winter- or holiday-themed book, or it may just be a favorite
story to curl up with inside on a cold winter day. But it must be available at the Mohansic
Library!
