Letter to Parents

MOHANSIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
704 Locksley Road
Yorktown Heights, NY 10598

							September 2008

Dear First Grade Parents,

As per our District policy, all first grade students are screened by
the District Speech-language Pathologists in September. Children are seen
informally in their classrooms during small group conversations.

The Speech-language Pathologists are listening to articulation
patterns, fluency, vocal patterns, and verbal expression. Some children may
be seen again for an individual conversation. Common concerns in the first
grade are articulation errors, especially with the “s, l, r, th” sounds
which are the later sounds to develop. Since speech patterns may affect
reading development, we can offer speech classes at Mohansic if they do not
interfere with other support services and classroom schedules. All classes,
at all grade levels, promote phonemic awareness with literacy development.
If the Speech-language Pathologist suggests that your child receive speech
services, you would be notified with another letter of information and a
permission request.

If you have any questions, please call me, 243-8160.

				Sincerely,

				Ms. Susan Zuckerman
				Speech-language Pathologist
