Do you accept late work?

Yes - to a point. Twice a quarter - once before progress reports and once
before report cards. Work from before progress reports (first five weeks of
quarter) MAY NOT be turned in late for report cards (last five weeks of the
quarter).

Are you available after school?

Yes. I am available on an appointment basis for students - all students
have to do is ask! My last class of the day is in room 219 - students can
find me there before getting on the bus. Before school, please check the
English Department office, just left of the stairs that come up from the
middle of the social studies hall (room 212).

How can I get in touch with you if I have a question or concern?

E-mail is the BEST way to reach me as our office is not equipped with an
answering machine. I check my email multiple times throughout the day and
will be able to respond in this manner very quickly. My email is:
jennifer.roy@wappingersschools.org Please label your message clearly so it
is not accidentally discarded.

Understand that phone calls are much more difficult to coordinate and will
only occur during the school day (7 AM to 2 PM). There is no secretary for
our office, so please call during periods when the teacher is available.

How can I check on my child's progress in your class?

First, check with the student since grades are posted regularly in class -
if the student doesn't know her grade, you should ask her why. If you email
me a request, I can email you a complete copy of my gradebook
that will identify assignment scores as well as any missing work.

--------------------------------------

Do you penalize for late work?

Yes. Our district-wide department policy is -10 percentage points per day
late on major assignments (essay, project, presentation, etc.). This means
that after ten days, a major assignment is worth 0 points. I am more
lenient on regular homework, but still deduct points appropriately. Note
that there is no reason for in-class work to be turned in late.

What supplies does my student need for your class?

English 9: Students should have pens and LOOSE LEAF paper (these tend to
become more scarce as the year goes on, so please make sure there is a
regularly updated supply), glue stick, a highlighter, post it notes,
scissors, and a two pocket folder. CHECK HOME PAGE FOR DETAILED LIST.
*Students who are regularly unprepared may have their grades penalized.
English 12 - Students should have pens and paper on a daily basis and would
benefit from having a folder to collect and organize work. A highlighter may
be beneficial for readings/notes and index cards will be helpful in
preparing for vocabulary tests.

--------------------------------------

What is your policy on discipline?

Students are expected to behave responsibly and respectfully. Every effort
will be made to deal with disuptive and disrespectful behavior in class. If
the problem(s) cannot be corrected in class, a referral will be made to the
appropriate Assistant Principal. Tardiness to class is recorded and
disciplinary referrals are submitted when tardiness becomes an issue. Cell
phones and other electronic devices are not permitted in class. PLEASE DO
NOT CALL OR TEXT STUDENTS DURING CLASS!

What is the summer reading assignment?

Students were provided a copy of the district's summer reading program at
the end of the previous school year. In addition, the summer reading
program requirements have been posted on the school's website. The summer
reading assignment is posted on my home page and the due date for all of my
classes is indicated on the calendar. ALL GRADE LEVELS DISTRICT WIDE HAVE
THIS ASSIGNMENT - THERE IS NO REASON FOR THIS TO NOT BE COMPLETED. Students
who have recently entered the district can find the assignment online or get
a copy from the teacher and will need to use the first three weeks of school
to complete the assignment outside of class.

--------------------------------------

What happens if my student is absent?

Students are responsible for getting their make up work from the teacher.
Work is posted, whenever possible, on the website and this should be the
first resource. Students are expected to stay on top of the work and be
prepared to re-enter the class either at speed or very close. Being
suspended (ISR - in-school restriction included)is the same as being absent
and the work is expected to be completed upon return, not after your
return.

--------------------------------------

Do you give extra credit work?

No. In an extreme circumstance, if a student has COMPLETED EVERY ASSIGNMENT
ON TIME and is still struggling to make the grade, that STUDENT should
approach the teacher regarding extra credit. Extra credit will not be
arranged with parents or prompted by parent inquiry/request.
