How are First and Second Honors determined?

Refer to page 25-26 in the student handbook:

First Honors: grade point average of 3.5 or above in academic subjects.
Second Honors: grade point average of 3.0 - 3.49 in academic subjects.

Here's how the GPA is calculated:

The GPA is calculated on academic areas only. For fourth grade these are
Reading, Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science.

The easiest way to generate a GPA is to let:
A+ = 13 A = 12 A- = 11
B+ = 10 B = 9 B- = 8
C+ = 7 C = 6 C- = 5
D+ = 4 D = 3 D- = 2
F+ = 1 F = 0

Add these numbers up for your child's grades.
Then divide by 5 since there are five subjects.
Then divide by 3 since the scale is expanded three times; in other words,
an "A" is represented by three possible values.

That should give you the GPA displayed in PowerSchool.

How do students achieve Plus Club in 7th and 8th grade?

To achieve a plus in a subject, students need to demonstrate consistent,
positive homework performance (less than 3 late assignments, no copying of
other students' homework), limit behavioral cautions (see PAS below),
display a positive attitude, and pay attention during class.

What is a PAS?

A 'PAS' is a Personal Accountability Sheet. Every Upper School student has
a PAS stapled in their planner each week as a visual reminder of their
success at meeting academic and social expectations at Bethany School. It
is an excellent self-monitoring tool. It also provides information for you,
as a parent.

If during the week, there is a missing assignment or a behavior problem
addressed by a teacher, it will be noted on the PAS.

If a student receives three cautions within one week, they will serve a
detention during recess and lunch. During that time, they will call their
parent to explain WHY they are in detention.

In the event that a student has five cautions within a single week, then
they will conference with their homeroom teacher to develop a plan to help
them meet academic and social goals.

What are the Service Hour requirements for 7th and 8th grade?

Service to God and community are encouraged at Bethany through completion of
service hours. Students fulfill 5 hours of service in 7th and 8th grade.
Sister Mary Elizabeth in the Christain Education deparment coordinates the
service hour program. Forms for students to record their service hours are
in the Office.

Service hours can be earned on campus and at pre-approved off campus
locations such as a student's church or in community service. Students are
encouraged to complete some of their service hours outside of campus to
broaden their experiences beyond their home and school.

Service hour opportunities are often announced at Monday morning assemblies
and students may ask teachers for service activities.

How does Senora Schlabach grade?

Homework = 20% of final grade

Class Participation = 25% (you must participate verbally in class)

Tests = 30%

Quiz = 25%

Grade Numerical Equivalent:

An A student, 100-93

As for class participation, an A student will speak Spanish in class, ask and
answer questions in Spanish; he/she also will have consistently excellent
quiz results. This student rarely uses English for communication purposes in
the classroom. Likewise, an A student needs to have his homework ready every
time and, finally, he/she must perform well on tests.

Students with B, 92-85

As for class participation, a B student will generally communicate in Spanish
during class, ask and answer questions in Spanish as well; a student with a B
grade will have consistently good results on quizzes. This student seldom
uses
English in class. A student with a B grade will have his homework virtually
every time and have good success on his tests.

Students with C, 84-76

As for class participation, a C student will try to ask and answer questions
in Spanish very often and in general have appropriate communication skills in
Spanish although he/she sometimes will use English for communication; a
student with a C grade will have fair quiz results. This student might miss
several homework assignments and perform average on his/her tests.

Students with D, 75-68

As for class participation, a D student intends but does not always
accomplish
asking and answering questions as well as communicating in Spanish. This
student may not put sufficient effort into homework assignments. Quiz and
test scores for this student will be below average

Students with F, 68-0

As for class participation, this student relies on English most of the time
and has a negative attitude toward the use of Spanish as the only acceptable
way of communication in class. This student has the tendency to miss homework
frequently, with the result that his quizzes and tests are poorly done.

What are Senora Schlabach's classroom expectations?

In our Spanish classes you will speak Spanish whenever it is possible to do
so. Imagine yourself talking in Spanish while in an English class! I don't
believe that choice would be very smart. On the other hand, if you are in a
desperate need to say something or find something out, you can do so if you
raise your hand and ask permission to talk in English.

Also:
Remember to do what you are told to do.
Be involved in group assignments.
Every student must participate in classroom activities.
