Victory Drill

It is that time again! For those of you familiar with Chapel Hill, you know Victory Drill is
often associated with first grade. For those of you new to the school, I trust this letter will
help you understand Victory Drill. Please keep me informed of any questions you have,
that way we can make this a positive experience for all those involved.

What pages does my child have to complete and how fast?

A.	Every child will start at page 1 in the book. The students are not allowed to move
onto page 2 until page 1 has been passed. Look for a colored “Congratulations” slip in
your child’s BEE Binder to indicate what page(s) he/she has passed.
B.	If your child passed Victory Drill in Kindergarten, he/she will start at page 40 and
complete through page 72 at the first grade passing rate.
C.	Passing rate= 40 words in 1 minute. This is two 2 full columns of words.

What do I have to do as a parent?

D.	If you have practiced at home with your child, and feel your child is ready, please
SEND IN A NOTE. We will only test students when we receive a note from home saying they are
ready.

Who do they read the pages to?

E.	Your child reads one-on-one to an adult.

Why do we do Victory Drill?

F.	The purpose of Victory Drill is for the students to gain accuracy in reading, and
reinforce phonics sounds, which are foundational to reading.

What is the reward?

G.	CHCS awards NIV Bibles to those students who complete Victory Drill by the end of
the school year. In first grade, the completion of Victory Drill is all 72 pages (NOT Review Sentences
pages- i.e. 7s). The 40 words have to be done in 1 minute for
a Bible to be awarded.

When do most students pass the pages?

I.	The students who pass Victory Drill usually do it in March/April/May. It is a long
process, but rewarding.
J.	Helpful Hints: The first students who pass Victory Drill are those who practice nightly
with an adult. Then they come to school with a simple note from a parent saying they are
ready to pass page _____. (I had a parent who made a simple form on her computer, which
saves time.) I know this takes discipline on the part of the parent, because life is busy.
Some students review the pages at breakfast, or in the car ride to school. It usually only
then takes the child 1-2 tries before passing the page at school. This is a great way to
practice reading at home, in place of nightly homework.

Does my child have to do this?

K.	Passing onto second grade is not dependent upon completing Victory Drill.
L.	Victory Drill is not required in my classroom. However, it is very beneficial. Great
growth in reading comes over the year, and you will be amazed at what your child is able
to read by May.

What if my child HATES practicing Victory Drill?

M.	Unfortunately, this sometimes happens. Here are a few things you can do to help:
      1.	Take some time off until your child’s confidence and ability in reading increases
      2.	Set a timer for 6-7 minutes and only practice Victory Drill for that long.
(Keep in mind their attention span- they want to know there will be an end!☺)
      3. Set up a reward system for completing a certain amount of pages.

Where do I find a Victory Drill book?

N.	New Victory Drill books are sold in the school store for $15.00. I do allow students to
borrow one from the classroom; however, damages will be assessed at the end of the year.
The replacement cost is $15.00.

Other information:

O.	I will explain this information to the students in class, to a certain degree, but I know
questions will arise as you work at home. Please keep me posted with any questions, as I
am sure other parents have the same questions. I want this to be a positive reading
experience.

The smiles are HUGE when the Bible is awarded in Chapel.

Thank you for your involvement-
Mrs. Brooke Osborne☺
