Welcome Back. I hope everyone had a wonderful break.
MATH - We are starting division. Our book teaches the partial quotient method of division so that is
what the students will be learning. Some of the students asked today if they could use a different
method that they had learned at home. I told them no because they will have this method on part
of the test. I told them that on a test, they can use any method they want unless it tells them to use the
partical quotient method. I really believe that there is more than one way to get the correct answer and
as long as the students know what they are doing and can demonstrate it, it is fine with me that they
use that method. But I do need to teach the partical quotient method and they do need to learn it.
Most of the students did a great job today and I feel that they will pick it up quickly.
READING - Some students started a new book today. I chose several books from the book room and
then they got to pick the book they wanted to read from that group. This way the student feel more
impowered in the decision making process and more ownership of the book. Some students have not
yet finished the book they were reading before break. They will need to finish that book before they
start the new one. Knowing that they will get the book they want to read next will encourage them to
finish the book they are now reading.
