What can I do to help my child be ready for First Grade?

Love them!!!! They are just beginning the great adventure of learning. They will make many
mistakes, as we all will, but they need to know that we are all there to help and guide them through
this big year. Mistakes are okay! We all make them! They are a natural part of our learning process.
As long as they know we all love them, and want the best for them, they will feel secure in that
knowledge and will be willing to take the risks they need in order to learn! It is an amazing year!
You will be so proud!

Does my child need to be able to read before starting First Grade?

No!! We are there to teach your child to read! In the past however, some children do come into First
Grade knowing some of the basic sight words. It is helpful for them, but not necessary!

How can I help my child learn to read?

Read, read, read to them! Pick easy to read books with predictable text. As you read be pointing to the
words. If you see a word that is repeated a lot, have your child say the word as you come to it. If there
is a picture clue, use it to help your child figure out the word. It is amazing how they begin to pick up
words!

Does my child have summer reading to do?

Yes, but they do not have to be able to READ these books. You should read them to them. You can
find the titles on our school web sight. These books do have some sight words in them, so they
might be able to recognize and read a few of the words.

What will be the first thing my child will learn about in First Grade?

Each other and how to love and respect one another! We will be doing a lot of activities to help them
feel welcomed and part of our community. They will realize that they have many jobs to do in order to
make a successful learning environment. We will also spend some time recognizing the color and
number words so they will see that learning can be fun and easy!

Can my child bring a snack?

It is a long morning and they will need to refuel their little bodies so that they can be the best they can
be!
