FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
How does my child get involved with speech therapy at school? Every year the speech pathologist screens kindergarten, first, and second graders for speech and language problems. The SLP (speech language pathologist) will sit in the hallway at the beginning of school and call each child in the class out for a one to one screen. Those that are new to the school will be screened also. Also if any parent has a concern, the parent can send in a signed note that they would like the SLP to call them. With a signed slip the SLP can screen a student. Does the SLP screen for hearing too? Yes. Every FAll the SLP screens the hearing of kindergarteners, first, third, and fifth graders. Also, all 9th graders are screened. If a child is new to the district at the elementary level they will get a hearing screening. If a child has problems the parents will receive a letter after two failed screenings. What does the hearing screening process involve? 1. Audiometrics That is when a child is asked to raise his or her hand when they hear a beep. The passing hearing level is 20 decibels. 2. Tympanometry This is when a microphone is put beside the child's outer ear. It will give the results of how well the eardrum is moving, if there is a hole in the eardrum, or if there is too much wax in the ear. |
