What do I need to have with me for class every day?

For every class, you need loose-leaf paper, your textbook, pencil case, and
the folder and notebook for that class. Some specific materials are necessary
for certain subjects:
Language Arts: Composition notebook
Integrated Math: calculator, ruler, graph paper
Art: sketch book

I want to raise my grade before midterms/report cards. Can I do extra credit?

The short answer is no. The longer answer is that extra credit is not an
instant-fixer for your grade. If you want to be satisfied with your grade,
do your best and be responsible throughout the grading period. Extra credit
will be offered randomly throughout the year; take advantage of it when it's
available.

When is my homework due? What happens if it's late?

Homework is due at the beginning of class. If you turn in a daily assignment
late (once the lesson has begun), you will receive a homework
infraction and no credit for the assignment. Projects (assignments that are
completed over several days and are worth more than 10 points) will lose 10%
of their worth for every day that they are late.

How can I (or my parents) contact Mrs. Humphrey?

The best way to contact me is by email. I keep my email open throughout the
day, and can respond most quickly in this manner. If a specific topic or
concern would be best addressed in person, please send an email to request a
conference. Conferences will not be conducted on a "drop-in" basis;
scheduling in advance allows the appropriate amount of time to be planned
for the conference.

What if I don't have time to complete my HW due to extra-curriculars?

You are a student first; your academic responsibilities take priority. You
will not be excused from an assignment because you "didn't have
time" to
complete it. Emergencies will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis and
will require a note from a parent (however, a note from a parent does not
automatically mean you will be excused from an assignment).

If I miss school, when do I get my make-up work?

Your make-up work is YOUR responsibility; you may collect your make-up work
the day you get back to school (or, you may check my Homework page on this
site). Work will not be sent to the office for
pick-up on the day of the absence. In cases of prolonged (3+ days)
absences, arrangements may be made (in advance) for make-up work to be
collected. Make-up work will not be given ahead of time, even for a planned
absence.

How long do I have to complete make-up work?

As stated in the school handbook, you have one full day for every day that
you missed to complete and hand in make-up work. For example, if you are
absent on a Monday, you would have all of Tuesday to complete your work and
it would be due Wednesday morning. Assignments turned in after your number
of allowed days will be considered late. All make-up work is YOUR
responsibility; I will not remind you or ask you to turn in assignments.

What if I have a question about my homework and I've already left school?

If you're not sure what is required to complete the assignment, call a
classmate for clarification. If you don't understand the material itself,
do the best you can and see me the next morning to explain. You can also
email me your question (although you may not get a response that evening, I
will be aware that you had an issue). Not completing
the homework and/or not handing it in will result in an infraction and no
credit earned for the assignment.

How much homework can I expect on a normal night?

On average, you will probably have around 90 minutes of homework per night.
The best way to handle it is to set aside time each afternoon/evening that
is your regular homework time; get yourself into a routine and you will find
homework is much easier to complete and manage. Some of your homework will
consist of regular, ongoing assignments (like Spelling, for example); I
strongly advise you to NOT wait until the last minute to complete these
assignments. Instead, pace yourself and work on them regularly, a little bit
each day.

When will I find out what my midterm/report card grade will be?

Any student may come to me at any time to check on his/her grade. If you
have a question or concern, talk to me about it before or after school (not
during class). I am also more than happy to respond to an email request for a
grade (from either a student or a parent/guardian).
