Accelerated Reader

The children will take (AR) tests in the morning from 8:30-9:00. If your
child has read an (AR) book, please fill out the AR paper that was sent home
and return it back to school. I now have parent volunteers for Monday (Mrs.
Ceccoli), Tuesday - (Mrs. Adelman), Wednesday (Mrs. Moffit), Thursday (Mrs.
Bleile) & Friday - (Ms. Winslow) to assist the children by locating the book
they are taking a test on and helping read the questions. Please let me know
what day you would be available to help out if something comes up and the AR
volunteer isn't available on their assigned day (Mrs. Patti Bleile is
available). Thank you for volunteering your time each week! Here are some
important things to remember about our Accelerated Reader Program.

How do I know if the book is an AR book?
•If a library book has an AR label on the edge of the binding or sometimes
our supplemental book is an Accelerated Reader book.
•The Norwalk Public Library has a list of all AR books the Norwalk Catholic
School Elementary St. Paul Campus has. You can use this list as a reference
and check out AR books there too.
•The Norwalk Catholic School website (www.ncsweb.org) has a list of all the
AR books Norwalk Catholic School St. Paul Campus has. You may have some of
these books at home on your bookshelves.

How many questions are on each AR test?
•Most books your First grader will read may have 5 or 10 comprehension
questions. These questions test how well your child comprehended the story.

How many times should my child read an AR book before taking a test?
•It is very important that your child reads the AR book TWICE before taking
a test. They are only allowed to take a test on an AR book ONCE during grade
school, so please make sure they have comprehended the story before asking to
take a test.

The children will GO BANANAS with excitement about reading AR books. I have
a bulletin board up in our classroom that has a monkey with each child’s name
on it. The bulletin board reads - - - WE'RE BANANAS FOR BOOKS. Every time
your child takes an AR test they get to put a sticker up on their AR banana.
I encourage the children to try to earn 10 points by the time they leave
First grade. HAVE FUN READING!!!
