Grade 5

We have blasted off to explore astronomy and all-things "space".  Ask the fifth-graders to explain how the earth began.

Students of grade 5 are continuing to share information about our watershed with their buddies in New Mexico.  This
new "high tech" pen pal program requires students to post their letters on a secure Wiki site and then allows the students to comment on what has been posted.

We had a challenging field trip on Thursday, October 13 at Sharon Woods:
River Explorer is an innovative, inquiry based, outdoor learning-lab that provides experiential, activity-based environmental education about the Ohio River and its watershed. Utilizing nets and live and lab specimens, students were introduced to a river ecosystem.

This hands-on education program is designed to help children learn about the ecology and importance of the Ohio River, its tributaries, and watershed. Classes were taught along the banks of Sharon Creek, one of the creeks in our watershed.

During the activities, students learned about the differences, structures, and interactions between and in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and how they function in a watershed.

      The Symbolic Monarch Migration

We have been invited to participate in the 16th annual "Symbolic Monarch Butterfly Migration" with students across North America. Over 60,000 students in the United States and Canada will create symbolic butterflies this fall and send them to Mexico for the winter. At the monarch sanctuaries in Mexico, children will protect the butterflies and send them north in the spring.

The symbolic butterflies build bridges of communication between students in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. United by the monarch butterfly, children across North America learn authentic lessons of conservation, cooperation, and ambassadorship. We have joined the celebration!

Remember the 3 rules in science class:
     1.  Come to class prepared.
     2.  Have a good attitude.
     3.  Expect to be challenged.
