Social Studies 6

For the next few weeks, the focus will be on the cultures of Medieval Europe.  After the fall of the Roman Empire, urban areas declined and life centered around a system of government called feudalism.  Small kingdoms replaced a central rule, and most Western Europeans lived and worked in farming communities.

We will begin our study of Europe with a map of the modern-day countries.  The children are presently completing a set of index cards labeled with the countries/capitals and hints for identifying them.  A map test where students will need to
locate the countries and match the country with the capital will be given on Friday, February 10.  Please encourage your child to play the "puzzle game" on the website listed at the bottom of this page.

The children will be given a study packet and map containing the information they need to know for minis, quizzes, and tests.  After the material is read in the book and discussed in class, the children will be instructed to highlight important facts in the study packet.  This information, along with worksheets and maps, should be reviewed on a daily basis.  Making flashcards for the highlighted material is STRONGLY encouraged.  These cards can be reviewed on a daily basis as part of their quiz/test preparation.  The following website enables the children to make flashcards on the computer:

The following link is an excellent tool for reviewing the location of countries, identification of capitals, world features, and monuments.   It is frequently used for mini tests.

Please encourage your children to tell you what they have learned in class each day.  Being able to verbalize information precipitates discussion.  This dialogue enables the children to summarize the information and focus on the important points.  Children are more attentive in class and eager to participate in class discussions when parents demonstrate their enthusiasm for the learning process.
