Please encourage your child to spend some time each day doing independent reading. The children have an opportunity to visit the library twice a week with their homeroom and language arts classes. The reading class will be a literature based reading program. Vocabulary for individual stories will be given prior to reading the story. Definitions for these words will be written in the reading notebook and should be reviewed before each test. All stories will be read and discussed in class. Test days are always announced. The children are strongly encouraged to reread the story before the test.Grade 6, 7, and 8 will be using a new vocabulary book this year. Please encourage your child to bring home the vocabulary book every night. Daily review and drill are necessary in order to be adequately prepared for the Wednesday tests. On the weekly tests, students will be required to know the spelling and definitions of the assigned words. All book work will be due every Monday, and the tests will be on Wednesday.Third Quarter Accelerated Reader Requirements: - 3 AR books completed and tests taken by Wednesday, March 14 - MINIMUM reading level: 5.2 [or book approved by the teacher] - MINIMUM page requirement: 100 pages per book [or book approved by the teacher] - AR test: 70% or higherBooks longer than 200 pages will count for 2 books; 300 pages for 3 books, etc. Pages may NOT be combined from two books, such as a book of 140 pages and a book of 160 pages to equal 3 books.Any additional AR tests over the requirement will be counted as extra credit. Additional tests can also be used to replace a low AR test. The AR grade for the quarter will be based on the completion of all AR requirements. Failure to complete the minimum requirements will result in point deduction.
