Extra Credit

Students may raise math test grades by following these steps.

1. On a clean sheet of looseleaf paper, write a sentence explaining the mistake that was made.

2. Write a complete sentence explaining the correct way to solve each problem that was answered incorrectly.

3. One-half of the amount subtracted for each mistake will be added back to the test grade. For example, if the test grade is 80%, it can be raised to 90%. If the grade is 60%, it can be raised to 80%.

Extra credit is due with the signed test and will not be accepted at a later date.

Examples:

I wrote 15 x n + 10. That would mean to multiply 15 by n and then add 10. I should have written 15 x (n + 10).

I thought that gh equaled 511. I forgot that two variables next to each other means multiply. gh equals 5 x 11 = 55. g + h = 16. The correct answer is 55/16.

I multiplied 2 x 2 first. I should have divided 4 by 2 first because in the standard order of operations you perform multiplication and division from left to right in the order they occur.

I added 4.1 and 1.7. I should have multiplied 3 times 4.1 and 5 times 1.7. Then I need to add the answers. (Students needs to show correct work here.) The correct answer is 20.8.

I did 8 times 9 is 72. 6 x 3 = 18. 18 + 8 = 26. 72 - 26 = 46. I should have subtracted 18 from 72 before I added 8 because addition and subtraction should be performed in the order they occur.

According to the order of operations the first step in solving this problem is to multiply 5.4 times 4.8. The answer is 25.92 (show your work). The next step is to divide 0.8 by 4. The answer is .2. The last step is to add .2 to 25.92. The correct answer is 26.12.

I wrote 15 x n + 10. That would mean to multiply 15 by n and then add 10. I should have written 15 x (n + 10)

I rushed on this problem and selected c. C is wrong because 7 is less than 9. The correct answer is B.

I wrote the numbers in order of smallest to largest. I should have ordered the numbers from largest to smallest.

I did not understand absolute value. Absolute value refers to distance from zero. It is always expressed as a positve number. The correct is A since 8 is greater than 5.

I did not read the problem carefully. When I saw sixth, I answered hexagon because it is a six-sided figure. The sixth shape in this pattern is A. octagon.

Christopher put 6 + 4 + 5 + 7 = 22 marbles in the can. There were 11 marbles in the jar. The correct is 22 + 11 = 33 marbles.

2 pen = 1 notebook

5 pencils = 1 pen 5 pencils cost $.50. so I pen cost $.50. 2pens or 1 notebook cost $1.00.

10 pencils = 1 notebook

To make this pattern 6 x 6, I would need to add one row and one column. The new row and column would have 5 black tiles. Show diagram.

The pattern is 1, 4, 7. 3 dots (1 up and 2 over) are added to each figure. The pattern would continue:

1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16. 16 is the correct answer.

To solve this problem, we need to find out how many customers are served each hour.

10:00 to 11:00 - 84

11:00 to 12:00 - 168

12:00 to 1:00 - 168 84 + 168 + 168 = 420 customers

2 + 4 = 6; 6 + 6 = 12; 12 + 8 = 20. The pattern appears to be +4, +6, +8 so the next step would be to +10. The correct answer would be D. 30.

(4 x 2) x 9 = (2 x 4) x 9 The order of 4 and 2 changes. The commutative property of multiplications states that the order of the factors can be changed.

The sum can be found by adding 29 + (-30). This is not a given answer. However 29 + (-30) = -30 + 29. The correct answer is C.

A negative times a positive is a negative so -8 x 1 = -8; then a negative times a negative is positive so -8 x -10 = 80

The rule for multiplying intergers is: a negative times a negative is a positive. The product of two factors with the same sign is always positive. If the factors have different signs, the answer is negative.

To solve this problem, you must add 23 + (-38). To add a positive and a negative number, you must find the difference between the absolute values of the two numbers. Difference means subtract. The difference between 23 and 38 id 15. Since 38 (the largest absolute value) is negative, then the answer is -15.
