ABOUT TRI-M

Tri-M is a national music honor society which recognizes outstanding
music students from around the United States. The organization is sanctioned
by the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) who has established a
minimum set of requirements to establish that every student selected meets
strict requirements regarding membership.

These requirements established by the national organization can then be
further regulated by each individual chapter. Minumum requirements to be
considered for membership in Portsmouth's Tri-M Music Honorary are as
follows:

     I. MUSIC PARTICIPATION:
The student who seeks admission to Tri-M should be enrolled all year in
at least one credited music ensemble at PHS. These can include any of
the following: Concert and Marching Band/ Select Choir/ Women's
Choir... as the Jazz Ensemble is not officially a full year credited
course it is not considered at this time.
In addition each member who seeks membership must also show an
increased commitment to the music making process by participation
in one of the following activities: Solo and Ensemble, auditioning for
and making County Honors Band or Choir, auditioning for and making
another honor music ensemble (i.e. All-State, or all District Honor
     Band or Choirs.)
Members who wish to be considered for membership that have not
completed the second part of this requirement must plan on auditioning
for/participating in such an activity for that academic year.
In addition, to still be considered a member in good standing you must
fulfill both parts of the participation requirements every academic
     year you are a member.

     II. SCHOLARSHIP:
As with most honor societies there are minumum grade requirements that
must be met in order to be eligible for membership.
To be eligible for membership, you must maintain a cumulative GPA of
3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all music classes (high school only) and a
minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4 point scale in all other
     coursework to date.
Failure to meet these guidelines will result in automatic
disqualification of your application for membership. Failure to
maintain these GPA requirements could result in suspension or expulsion
     from the organization.

     III. LEADERSHIP:
The members will be selected with attention to either current
exhibition of/or potential to exhibit superior leadership skills.
Leadership is a quality that will take any individual far in life. Every
student will be evaluated on the example they set as a way of
identifying the best possible candidates for the organization.

     IV. SERVICE
Leaders are expected to serve, not because they are paid, but because
unselfish service to others shows their ability and desire to serve
others. Every member will be expected to serve their department and
plan and carry out a service project of lo less than twenty hours
during the course of the year. Possible Service projects could include:
Fundraising for needed equipment, organizing and helping carry out a
peer lessons program, organizing equipment or music, etc.
Every member is expected to carry out at least 20 hours of service
every year they are a member.

     V. CHARACTER
We wish to associate the name of our organization only with the highest
caliber of individuals possible. Every member should be of the highest
possible character. Actions in and outside of the music program must be
considered when evaluating members for membership.
Actions that show a member to have breached this requirement may result
in that member's suspension or expulsion from the group.

     BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP
     * Participation in Honor Societies always looks good on a college
       application
     * Our Tri-M Chapter will also organize field trips to better enhance our

     * Every member is eligible for individual advancement through
       nationally sanctioned music honors
