Kindergarten Connection

Week of Feb. 6, 2012

Remind your children to join my clubs (in the morning after they get unpacked or at free time)!!If you haven’t turned in your registration for’12-13 school year, turn yours in today!

Pre- reading skills: We learned the following sight words: down, can, off, you, out, for. Try finding these words in your favorite books! In addition we practiced hearing the short vowel sounds in CVC words. This is still difficult for some children, but overtime, they will become more fluent in identifying sounds and hearing them in words!

Dental Health: We readThe Tooth Bookand we watchedTooth Wisdom, too! This movie taught us all about our teeth and the ways to keep them healthy. Our class made a list of ways to keep teeth healthy, ask your child if he/she knows how! We learned the right way to brush our teeth, and how many times a day the Dentist recommends brushing your teeth.

We readHow Many Teethand learned that we have two sets of teeth: baby and permanent. Did you know that we have 20 baby teeth (some of us fewer because of a lost tooth :D ) and 32 permanent teeth! We also played a tooth dice game. The object of this game was to see who could fill up the 32 teeth on their mouth card first, by rolling the dice! We really had fun with this game!

We watchedThe Adventures of Wiggly Toothand readLoose Tooth.  We found out how our permanent teeth push our baby teeth out and why our baby teeth become wiggly!

Religion: We worked on Chapter 14 this week.

We learned that Jesus’ friends followed him and helped him teach about God.  When they gathered together they always had a cross. We made a beautiful mosaic cross to remind us that we can be friends of Jesus and so can our families! We learned the rules of going to Mass have gone to Church for Prayer Services. If you don’t do it already, take your child to Mass and afterward talk to them about what is happening!

Math: Students worked on addition, counting past 100 and counting backwards from 15. We continued to work on telling time to the hour on a digital and analog clock. We played an Attribute Spinner game, were introduced to the Number grid and played a number search game on this grid, were introduced to the penny (ask your child to find/identify pennies at home) and made SYMMETRICAL hearts to help us create a special Valentine.

AfternoonThis week the students enjoyed a few different games using a number grid to 100 and games to practice telling time to the hour.  Each child also had the opportunity to come to "Icard's Grocery Store" and count pennies to buy different priced snacks.  Handwriting was a large focus in the afternoon this week as well as identifying the sound at the beginning, middle, or end of a word.

Have a great weekend!
