Classroom Management

Kindergarten Parent Information

To ensure that each child has a pleasant, positive learning experience, a classroom management plan for Kindergarten has been developed. Every child deserves to learn in an environment that allows learning. This plan will help insure control in the learning environment.

Our kindergarten class has a system of classroom management based on five rules:

1. We raise our hand before speaking

2. We keep our hands, feet, and objects to ourselves.

3. We clean up after ourselves.

4. We listen.

5. We share.

I use an “ANGEL” system…every child is an angel and starts out at green. The following consequences are for a child who chooses to break a rule:

FIRST TIME: This is only a warning. The child will be reminded of the rules. The child’s name will be written in the behavior log.

SECOND TIME: The child’s name clip is moved to the yellow angel. The child is reminded of the rule. The child will be moved to a quiet area of the room for 5 minutes.

THIRD TIME: The child’s name will be moved to the orange angel. The teacher will discuss the problem with the child. The child will be moved to a quiet area for 10 minutes.

FOURTH TIME: The child’s name will be moved to the red angel. The teacher will call the parents to discuss the problem. The child will go to the principal’s office to complete his/her work for the rest of the day.

SEVERE DISRUPTION: Any behavior, which endangers other children or is destructive to school property will immediately move to red and go to the principal’s office. Parents will be called.

(If a child chooses to be severely disruptive, he/she will be referred to the principal's office immediately. You will be contacted in this event. Please note: Fighting or aggressive behavior in any form will absolutely not be tolerated. It will be regarded as severely disruptive behavior.)

At the end of each day, every child will receive a paper angel to reflect the color of angel he/she achieved. If it is any color other than green, please check the back for a message to explain the problem. Parents in the past have had the child keep a collection and reward them after they have received so many. This is not necessary but a fun way for students to feel good about their “angel” like behavior.

When the children are "caught being good." There will be various individual or group rewards given.

INDIVIDUAL REWARD EXAMPLES:
Sticker reward will be given to child.
Child can choose a computer game to play with a friend.
Child is chosen to do a "special job."

GROUP REWARD EXAMPLES:
Afternoon snack time held outside if weather is nice.
Popcorn treat.
Storytime outside if weather is nice.

Every day is a fresh start with a new chance to do well. Since the consequences for breaking the rules are immediate and specific, students will not loose other privileges, nor will the child be kept after school or punished in any other way. I am excited about the positive direct approach of our classroom management system.

If necessary, teacher, parents and child will set up an individual discipline plan to address any challenges that your child is dealing with in the classroom. My goal is to educate all students and I will strive to maintain an environment that is conducive to learning for everyone.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Please return on the first day of school! Thank you.

SCHOOLBAGS AND LABELS
Each child should have a bag with his or her name on it. Your child should bring the bag to school every day. Please help your child to remember to bring the bag to school EVERY DAY! If the BAG gets lost, left in the other car, or at the babysitters, etc. Please send a plastic grocery bag (the kind with handles) to use that day. Please check his/her school bag each day for work or notes. Also, please put your CHILD'S NAME on his/her coat, school bag, sweater, gloves, hat, boots, etc

BIRTHDAYS
We will be celebrating your child's birthday in class on his or her special day. Birthday treats are optional. Students with a summer birthday will have a special day assigned during the year.

SAFETY
Please help with your child learn his/her name, parent's names, address, and telephone number. Help him/her know what to do if lost, hurt or scared. Each child should learn the name of the children in his/her carpool and the adult driving. Finally, don't send your child to school too early, as they must wait on the staircase in the front parking lot until school starts. As you help your child learn his/her address and phone number, try teaching it to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" or another familiar song.

LOGO LANGUAGE
Your child is invited to bring "LOGOS" or labels cut from packages for our beginning reading program. It should be a LOGO that your child can recognize and tell the other students what it says. (Example: "McDonald's" "M&M's" "Cheerios", etc.) Point out to you child these words that he/she can read, and encourage him/her to find more. DUE SEPT. 7

HEALTH
Please do not send your child to school if he/she is ill. Papers that he/she missed may be sent home with another child or saved until your child returns to school.

CONFERENCES
There will be two official parent-teacher conferences scheduled, at the end of first term (end of Nov.) and at the end of second term (middle of Feb.). At any other time during the year, I will be happy to discuss any concerns or problems your child is having. Please call ahead for an appointment.

Snacks

We will have 10-15 minutes for snack each day; a small, preferably healthy food and no drink. Students will be permitted to get a drink from the drinking fountain after they have finished their snack. Every student should bring their own snack each day. If you have extra snacks you could donate (in case a child forgets a snack), please send them in.

Toys at School ?
Except for Super Star days, toys should not be brought to school. We have problems with toys in pockets or backpacks. Please help your child to understand that toys should be left at home. Sometimes jewelry and watches can also be a problem - especially if it is noisy or distracting for the children.

HELP YOUR CHILD AT HOME
1. Help your child to practice writing his or her name correctly.
2. Ask your child questions about his or her day at school (and don't believe it when he/she says "nothing"
3. Practice with your child what her or she will say about his sharing (show and tell) before he comes to school.
4. Have your child count objects in your home, tell you the color of objects, and make comparisons. Practice counting as high as he or she can go.
5. Help you child to hear the letter sounds in words (Example;" table" begins with "t-t-t" sound). Next, discuss the letter name, and help him/her practice writing the letter correctly.
6. Read to your child and take him regularly to the library. Fill out and return the reading chart each month.

SNOWDAY

Follow OAKHILLS for school cancellations.
In the case of extreme snow conditions, instead of canceling school, they will delay the start of school by two hours, and dismiss at the normal time. IGNORE NO HALF DAY CLASS. The half day kids will go to school 9:50-11:45 and the full day kids will go to school 9:50-2:30.

ABSENCES
If your child has been absent, please send a note to school with your child when he or she returns to school.

SUPER STAR
Your child will be assigned two days to bring items for his/her own personal show & tell. This doesn't have to be anything "educational." The purpose is to give your child some experience speaking in front of a group, and help him/her feel special. Your child should only bring ONE or two items each day . This items needs to stay in the backpack until it is time to show it, then returned to the backpack. Except for show and tell days, toys should not be brought to school. We have had problems in the past with toys in pockets or backpacks. Please help your child to understand that toys should be left at home. Sometimes, jewelry or watches can also be a problem - especially if it is noisy or distracting for the children.

HANDWRITING
As we are working on handwriting, I ask you to work with your child. It doesn't help a child to make a whole page full of numbers, if he is practicing them wrong!! As the children are working, I monitor the class, helping here and there, but I am not able to watch EACH child as he or she writes EACH number. Be sure to show your child to always start at the top of the letters or numbers, and how to form them correctly by going around the way they should. Start with your child's name and help him/her to form these letters correctly. Continue helping with other numbers and letters as we practice them at school. We will be working with the small muscles of your child's fingers to develop the strength and flexibility for better writing. Encourage activities at home, such as puzzles, beads, lacing, cutting (and picking up the little scraps), coloring, tracing, writing name and numbers, and games or toys with lots of little pieces (the messy ones)! All of these will help develop the finger muscles for better writing and control.

HOLD PENCIL CORRECTLY
Help your child to hold his/her pencil correctly. This seems hard for some of them at first, but we need to help them form good habits now. Your child should pinch the pencil between the tips of the thumb and index finger and rest it on the side of the third finger. Be sure your child is only using the thumb and two fingers to hold the pencil, not the ring finger. Be sure your child isn't using the entire thumb or knuckle part of the thumb to control the pencil, just the tip of the thumb. Also, help your child to hold and use the scissors correctly. Show your child how to cut with the scissors "pointed up," and to turn the paper (not turn the sciss
