How to Study for a Test

How to Study for a Fourth Grade Test

Ø   When the homework says “read ahead” or “reread” a lesson, then do it.

Ø   Read the lesson aloud to someone who can listen to you and help you correctly read the words.

Ø   Use the vocabulary flashcards as a way to quiz yourself.

Ø   Read the definitions and see if you can correctly identify the vocabulary words.

Ø   Read the vocabulary words and see if you can correctly say the definition.

Ø   Illustrate the vocabulary word to get a picture in your mind to help you understand the word.

Ø   Review the study guide every night because it matches the test and helps you see what you need to know.

Ø   Close to the end of the chapter, the pages with sticky notes and the study guide highlights will help you focus your studying, too.

Ø   Work with a partner.  Invite another fourth grader to study with you, ask an older sister or brother, get Grandma or Grandpa involved, work with Mom or Dad – allow people to help you and you help them, too.

Ø   Rewrite your notes.

Ø   Use a scented marker to help you smell the concepts.

Ø   Make a power point slide show of the vocabulary words.

Ø   Get your whole body involved. Do jumping jacks or hop on one foot while someone quizzes you about vocabulary and main ideas.

Ø   Challenge yourself by setting a goal.  Perhaps your parents will agree to allow you a certain treat or privilege if your test grade is C or better.

Ø    Make honors something that will bring family rewards.

Ø   Keep a sticker chart on the refrigerator.  Post a sticker or a star for every assignment or test that has a C or better grade.

Ø   If you don’t understand something, then ask.  Ask, ask, ask, ask, ask until it makes sense.
