Accelerated Reader

			                           September 8, 2011
Dear Parents/Students,
Every student is required to have the book that he/she is
reading for Accelerated Reader with him/her EACH DAY. The
Accelerated Reader (AR) program is one way to individualize reading
for each child. Every student will be reading at their own “reading
zone” or “reading level” and working on their own goal of points for
each Trimester. The zone is based upon your child’s score after
taking the AR Star Reader Test last week in the computer lab.
I have given every child a pink “Reading Log”. Every child is
expected to read at least 30 minutes a day. There will be 10-15
minutes given at school for reading the AR book. Every day each
child is expected to write on the “Reading Log” of what pages he/she
reads that day at school and at home. I will look at these “logs”
daily. When a child finishes reading a book in his/her “reading
zone”, he/she will be able to take a test on it. Accelerated Reader
Tests can be taken between 9:00-3:30 only. Students goal on tests is
to have at least 85% correct.
As a class, we may read books that are not in your
child’s “Reading Zone”. If your child has already started a book
that is not in their “Reading Zone”, he/she may finish it and take a
test on it. But the rest of the time, the books should be from
their “Reading Zone” unless I have given permission to do otherwise.
I will print and send home AR tests results every 2-3 weeks.
Books that the class read together will count as a grade on
their own to be averaged in with the other Language Arts grades. At
the end of each Trimester, a grade will be given for what percentage
of the goal your child met and a grade for the average percentage (of
all tests) being correct.
Mrs. Knollman has gone through most of the fiction books in the
library to put a label on them for the Reading Zone and the book
points. I plan to get the books in my room labeled in the next few
weeks. If you want to know what a book’s reading zone or points are
and they are not on the book, you can follow the directions below to
access the information online.
