Grading Policy

Students in grades 1-8 receive an EFFORT grade each Trimester. Additionally, students in grades 4-8 receive an ACHIEVEMENT grade each Trimester. Kindergarten students receive an EFFORT grade for the 2nd and 3rd Trimesters.

Effort grades are S for "satisfactory" and N for "needs improvement." I evaluate the students effort at the end of each music class. Students who participate in class, follow directions, and show respect for the instruments receive a 'plus' mark. A 'check' mark means the student needed reminders to participate, did not follow directions, or did not use practice time wisely.

Letter grades for 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders are based on written test scores and performance evaluations. Written tests are given at the end of major units of study. A review sheet will be sent home and the test date will be announced at least 2 days before the date. I reserve the right to give the occasional pop quiz! Performance evaluations are given after several weeks of practicing new skills. Students are given practice time during music classes, during recess, and before or after school, if they choose. Please visit optionC.com for achievement scores in grades 4 - 8.
