Update for January 29th through February 10th!
                                    Classroom Highlights!
100th Day Celebration!
We are just a day away from celebrating the 100th Day of School together. The children have been asked to collect 100 items to put into their "Collection Bags". A memo was sent home last week about this. Also, we are dressing up as 100 year old men and woman. That memo came home today (1/29). If you have any questions about either one of these special tasks, please let me know right away.We are excited to celebrate this very important day!

Room 19's Valentine's Day Party Is Approaching!
The Party...
Our Classroom Valentine's Day Party is being organized with the help from Mrs. Gage and Mrs. Goetz. It will be on Friday, February 10th at 2:30. If you are interested in helping please let me know right away so I can forward your e-mail to both of them. They have already e-mailed parents who indicated interest in wanting to help (earlier in the year). If you have not received a message from them let me know.
The Special Cards...Below is a list of names of the children in our class. Please have your child create and bring a friendship, valentine card for everyone on the list. We do not want anyone to feel left out! Please be sure you have your child write the names of their friends and sign their own name as well on each card. This makes the valentine card giving much more important to them. We have discussed in class that Valentine's Day does stand for love but it also reminds us of how much we care about our friends. I will be focusing on the friendship aspect of Valentine's Day with the children so your help with this is appreciated.

The Valentine's "Mailbox"...We will be creating a "mailbox" for all of our Valentine mail here in class. Although I have some craft materials, if you would like to send in Valentine stickers, ribbon, paper, etc. to help with decorating that would be very kind of you. ALL of the children will share the supplies that is sent in.

Worth Saying Again...
"Snow" What!?
As we have all seen in these past few weeks the weather can be unpredictable.  We try very hard to get the kiddos outside for recess to run off energy and have fun. PLEASE consider packing a small bag of extra clothes for occasions when your son/daughter may get wet and muddy from playing. It is very important that you also send your child in boots each day of the winter season so that even if there is no snow the wet, damp grass, mud, puddles and left over leaves from fall won't be a problem for those little toes and feet in wet socks. Also, PLEASE write your child's name in everything! There are 21 students in our class and we have similar boots, mittens, hats and even coats. Thank you for taking the time to do this. If you have any questions let me know.

Snack and Friendship Time!
THANK YOU to those of you who donated extra snack for our "forgetter's cupboard". We really appreciate your generosity!

Second Grading Period and Report Cards!
If you have not done so already, please return the bottom signature/comment section of your child's report card as soon as possible. It is important for me to know that you have seen and read your child's report. Thank you!

First of all...
THANK YOU to the many families who have donated extra supplies to use in our classroom! We appreciate your generosity!
Worth Saying Again For Those Who May Have Forgotten...
Some Of Us Need New Art Supplies!

As we are in our second semester together, we are all in need of new crayons, pencils and glue sticks. Please take some time over this coming weekend to purchase some new crayons for your child as well as new glue sticks and 3 to 4 new sharpened pencils.

Units Of Study!
In language arts we have been very busy becoming familiar with the letter sounds of 'sh', 'ch' & 'th' in themes such as sheep, chocolate and thoughtful thinking this past week. We have been recalling the NEW Red Words (Sight words listed in the "Activities To Do At Home" section of our website.) for the third grading period as well as have been continuing to write many fun and interesting stories in Writer's Workshop. Some of the skills we have been reviewing and practicing include identifying characters in a story, knowing the setting of a story and predicting what will happen next in a story by using a fun technique called "Story Ball". Ask your child about the fun we have had with it! We have also been using our sounding out to become familiar with unknown words in stories as well as our making words activities.  We have been writing words that are known as well as unknown by using our Word Wall and our own inventive Kindergarten spelling as well. This will be something we will continue to do as often as possible. Soon, we will begin our Kindergarten version of "The Room 19 Reading Club" and our "Mystery Reader Club" as well. More information will be sent home about these two new aspects of our school day very soon.

In math, we have been working with shapes. We have been focusing on the vocabulary sides and corners (points) while looking closely at 2-D and 3-D shapes within our classrom and school. We will be exploring shapes for the next several weeks while also becoming familiar with and practicing the skill/concept of creating math story problems using simple addition and subtraction equations!

In science, we are studying the moon, sun and other stars along with the changing weather of the earth. This is a brief mini unit because we have already been observing and studying the weather and seasons as they have changed thus far in the school year. This mini unit will focus mostly on the sun and moon with an understanding of day and night. Our next full unit will be about nutrition and making healthy choices with food, exercise and lifestyle.

In social studies, we will begin a new unit that focuses on our Government. We will become familiar with the importance of the roll of The President of The United States as well as become familiar with important symbols and landmarks of our great country.

As always, we are always very busy learning and having fun together in Room 19!
                                                   Have a great day!
                                                         Fondly,
                                                      Mrs. Ladner
