Phonics Dance
Sh - Say "s-h, sh, sh, sh" (Put your finger to your lips ans make th
sh sound as you say the sh sound three times.
Ch - (It's time to do the chicken dance cha cha dance!) Say, "c-h,
ch, ch, ch. C-h. ch, ch, ch"
Th- Say,"This is a thorn and that is a thistle." Chant the soft "th"
first (tongue out), "t-h, th, th, th. T-h, th, th, th." Repeat
sayint the hard "th" (tongue behind teeth), "t-h, th, th, th. T-h,
th, th,th."
Ow - Make the letters o and w with your fingers. Hiot them together
and say "ow, ow. Going down, going down, d-o-w-n." (Pretend to
slide your arms down the slide as you say d-o-w-n-."
Ou - Make ther letters o and u with your fingers. Hit them together
and say,"o-u, ou. O-u-t, o-u-t get out of here you buymble bee."
Oo (book) - (These are the bully brothers.) Sat, "O - O, ooooo."
Make the letter o on each hand. Bring them to the ground asyou say0-
0. Jump up when you say the chant.
Oo (boot) - (These are the nice twins.) Say, "O-O,00000" Make the
letter 0 0n each hand. Put each hand in the air as you say the
letter. Pull your hands apart as you chant the oo sound.
Ing - (This is the King of the ING's dance.) Say, "i-n-g. ing, ing,
ing. I-n-g, ing, ing, ing." (Jump up and down three times and turn
in a circle as you chant it.)
All - Day,"a-l-l, a-l-l, a;;. a;;, a;;." Hve the kids march three
times and throw their hands out to the side to show they mean
everything as they say the words "all, all, all."
Ar - Say, "car,car, c-a-r, you sitck your hand in a jar of stars. A-
r, ar,ar,ar,." Elongate the left side of your lips as you
chant "ar", "ar","ar".
Or - (Pretend you are a seal.) Say, "o-r, or, or, or. O-r,
or,or,or. I want more fish!" (Put your hands in the air and clap
three times as you say "or,or, or" Then point to yourself as you
chant, "I want more fish!")
Oa - Say,"o said to a, Oh, I love you (grab your heart) and a said
absolutely nothing." Say, "So when you see o and a what do you
say/" (Make the long O sound and show you muscles because you are
long and strong.
Igh - Say, "I-g-h, III" (Gently pull your eyes ou of the side of
your face three times.) Don't forget the t...ight, ight."
Ea - Say, "you take a scaredy cat e. You take a scaredy cat a. You
put them together and what do they say? EEEEEEEE!!!!!!" (Pretend
like you are so scared when you say, EEEE!)
Ee - Say, "when you see the double e you sayee,ee. It's a bumblebee
party!"
Ay - Say,"some letters, a-y, ay,ay,ay. (Pretend to dribble a
basketball.) Hey do you want to play? Swish, score, hooray! Yah!
But don't forget this...Some letters a-y, ay,ay,ay. That's at the
end of the worde and don't forget it!"
Ai - Say, "a said to i, hey i get out of my way. I am saying a
today! So when you see a-i you say ay."
Eigh - Say, "e-i-g-h, ay,ay."(Show you muscles because it is the
super hero or the long and strong vowel A.)
Ir ans Ur - Say, "we are takingg a ride on a motorcycle. Rev up your
motorcycle! I-r,ir and u-r, ur in the middle of a word." (Pretend
you are riding a motorcycle as you chant the ir adn ur sound.)
Er - Say, "but it's e-r, er. E-r, er at the end of a word." (March
as you say e-r, er, e-r,er. Point behind you when you say, "at the
end of the word."
Oy - Say "o-y, oy,oy,oy at the end of a word." (While you chant,
point to your mouth because that's where your noisy voice is and it's
in the middle of your face.)
Tion - Say,"t-i-o-=n, tion, tion, T-i-o-n, tion, tion." (Clap your
hands over your head and move from side to side as you say it.)
Sion - Say, "s-i-o-n, sion, sion. S-i-o-n, sion, sion." (Bend over
and clap hands down by your ankles as you say it.)
Ph - Say, "when you see p-h, you don't say p-h, you say f...f,f,f,.
When you see p-h, you don't say p-h, you say f...f,f,f."
Kn - Say, When you see p-h, you don't say k, you sy n, N,N,N. When
you se k-n, you don't say the k, you sayn, N,N,N." (knock softly on
you heade twoice and the knocck on your knees once as you are
saying, "N,N,N.")
Wr - Say, "shh, don't wake the w. Shh, don't wake the w.
RRRRRRRRRRRR."
Ed - Say,"when you see e-d at the end of a root word sayd,"d" (make
the d sound) or r "t" (make the t sound) you can also say ed."
Wh = Say, "w-h, w-h, wh,wh,wh,wh. It's a question word~ who, what,
when, where, why and which."
Aw - Say, "a-w,aw." P{retend there's a baby monster, rock her and
give her a kiss.
Au - Say, "a-u, au. A-u, au. Au,au,au." (Keep holding the monster
with your left hand. Point to her with your right hand chanting a-u,
au,a-u, au (this lets the baby monster know how cute she is as you
drive in your automoblile.
Aught = Say "a-u-g-h-t, aught. A-u-g-h-t, aught."
Ought - Say "o-u-g-h-t, ought. O-u-g-h-t, ought.
Ew - Say, "st the end of a word...the romantics. E-W, oooooooo."
(They are so in love. Place one hand over your heart and then the
other as you say each letter.)
Ui - Point to someone in the class and say, "U"/\. Point to yourself
and say, "I". Put them together and, "ooooo". Grab your heart as
you say, "OOOO."
Ion - Say, "i-o-n, i-o-n, ion,ion, i-o-n,i-o-n, ion, ion." (Be a
mime and pretend you are pulling an onion out of the ground as you
say the hunk and chunk.
Ow (at the end of the word) - Say, "sometimes you say "ow" but
sometimes you say "o" when you see o-w at the end of a word. Repeat
twice. Make a big letter O with your arms joined together above your
head.
Ice~ Say, "I-c-e, i-c-e, ice, ice! I-c-e, i-c-e, ice,ice!" Pretend
like you are freezing each time you say the word ice.
Ace - Say, "A-c-e, a-c-e, ace, ace! A-c-e,a-c-e, ace,ace!" Pretend
you are freezing each time you say the word ice.
