Math iPad Apps:
Finding apps for the math classroom has been quite an adventure. This year I
am one of six teachers piloting a classroom set of iPads. It has been quite
the experience.
I teach Trigonometry/ Pre-Calculus and Calculus. Most of these Apps would be
appropriate for any 7-12+ grade level math class.
Here are some of the apps that have been working in my classroom:
1. Underscore Notify ($1.99) by Underscore AB
Underscore notify allows my students to take notes directly on a .PDF files
that I have prepared
for them to download from my website. The students can then either email them
to themselves
or upload them to their googledoc accounts. Although the app isn't perfect it
has some really
nice features for a math class. Besides typing and free hand writing, there
is some math text
and students can create lines and shapes. It's a really nice app for note-
taking.
2. Quick Graph (free) by Columbiamug
The free version allows for students to graph explicitly solved equations. It
is so very user
friendly with extremely good graphics. The paid version is nice for more
complicated equations.,
but not completely necessary. Equations are easily entered using (x, y) or
polar coordinates.
My students use it very easily with very little training necessary. They are
able to graph in 2-D
or 3-D. Great app for graphs.
3. Kahn Academy video series. (free) by Kahn Academy
Kahn Academy has a series of free Apps containing videos on a variety of Math
topics. They are very well done. Note that the titles of the Apps are not
always indicative of the course contentlisted. Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 are
both fairly advanced Algebra topics and are probably both applicable in a
high school Algebra 2 and/or Pre-Calc class.
4. iUnit Circle (free) by Wooblue
This App is a very helpful learning tool that helps introduce Trig students
to the Unit Circle. It shows a visual as well as numerical model of the unit
circle. It's very helpful to reinforce understanding of the topic.
5. Video Calculus (free) by Thinkwell
This is another series of Calculus videos that are very well done and are
helpful in reinforcing topics covered in the course.
6. Formulas HD (free) by Daniel Byon
This App gives the students access to the many formulas necessary to use in a
Calculus course. It's a good resource until students have the formulas
memorized.
7. Math Ref (free) by Happy Maau Studios
This App has a plethora of Math reference material built into it in many
areas. It contains rules, properties, defintions, theorems, etc. from
Algebra, Geometry, Calculus and more. This app is very nice for study
purposes.
8. MathSheet (free) by Tobias Haustein
This App is a very nice simple to use scientific Calculator that allows the
user to see quite easily their present and past entries.
(more to come)
