Family Discussion Questions

I created this page after my own frustration with asking my children about their day only to be told, "School was fine" or "We didn't do anything today."  As a teacher, I know that the students do many things every day but rarely discuss all they've learned with their families.  For that reason, I wanted to provide you with questions you can ask your children that are directly related to the skills we are learning in class.  These questions/ideas should generate conversation and not simple "yes" or "no" answers.  I will update this page every time I update the newsletter.

I would love your feedback on this page.  Let me know if you find it helpful.

Questions/ideas for the week of November 16, 2009:

1.  Tell me about the three sounds "ed" makes.  Let's think of some words that have "ed" endings and decide what sound they make.

2.  Can you name Stow's mayor?  Ohio's governor?  The US president?  How did those people become a mayor (or governor or president)?  (You want them to be able to explain that citizens vote to elect them.)

 3.  Let's find some nouns around the house and see if we can make them plural.  Try to find 10.

4.  Tell me about the story, "Hedgehog Bakes a Cake."  Who was it about and what happened?

5.  What is a topic sentence?  What was your topic sentence for your turkey persuasive paragraph?

6.  Tell me about one feature of non-fiction text and what that feature's purpose is.

7.  How far away from 100 is the number 52?  How did you figure this out?  (You can do this with other numbers as well.)
