Welcome to Room 12's Newsletter
Here's what's happening for the week of November 23, 2009:
Reading:
Literacy
CAFE - We are still working with the features of non-fiction text. This week, the students will be making books about non-fiction features. Don't forget that they need a picture of themselves tomorrow (Monday).
Daily 5 skills will focus on proper nouns and compare/contrast. I will not be meeting with reading groups this week. Instead, I will be working with students individually to check their reading growth and set new goals.
Phonics Skill of the week: - There will be NO SPELLING TEST this week.
Whole Group Story - Lemonade For Sale
Skill - Commas in a series and Journal Entries
The students have worked very hard the past several weeks on writing persuasive paragraphs with topic sentences, conclusion sentences, and details. These paragraphs turned out great and are on display outside of our classroom. Please come by and see!
This week, we will review how to write journal entries and will write in our dialogue journals.
Math
There will be no math fact cards this week. Please study all of the cards (old and new) to keep skills sharp when beginning the new facts next week.
We will be starting a new unit this week: Shapes, Halves and Symmetry. This unit will combine geometry skills with computational skills.
Social Studies
Last week, the students learned about voting and elections. We conducted classroom elections for three mayors. This week, the "cities" will come up with a name and rules for their group. The students will also participate in city council meetings to solve some specific problems. This is a fun unit. Please ask your children about the activities they are doing daily.
Other News:
1. Please take the December Survey found on the home page right before this icon. I have an idea for a classroom service project, but I need your input! Thank you!
2. Your child got new Book-It forms for November. December's sheet is on the back, so don't throw November's away! The due date is listed on the form too. It is no long necessary for you to be filling out logs for reading and math facts at home. I am trusting that you are doing these activities nightly at your convenience.
3. Continue to work on Study Island at home...at your convenience.
4. I NEED your help for a non-fiction features book we are going to be making next week. By MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23, all kiddos will need 1 and only 1 picture of themselves. The picture can be of them alone or of them in an action shot. It needs to be a picture that we are able to glue into a book. I also need magazines and newspapers. You may want to peruse through them first and take out any articles not appropriate for 2nd graders. I am particularly looking for magazines or newspapers that show maps, diagrams, captions, etc. Thank you!!!!
Happy Thanksgiving!!! I am very thankful for your children. I love working with them every day!
