Dec. 2 Fri: HMWK: Note Syntax p. 28 and the uses of the infinitive. The new use of the infinitive is Indirect Statement. Indirect Statement uses infinitive to show” time.” Do NOT translate it as “to…” Pres. Inf. shows same time as main verb. Perf. Inf. shows time before main verb so trans. as “had …ed. Fut. Inf. shows time after main verb so trans. as “ will…” One other thing…Verbs of saying, thinking, hoping, believing, perceiving, etc introduce Indirect Statement. AND, the Subject will be in the Acc. Case! This is the example from Indirect statement p. 28.
Scimus pueros venire. Scimus= we know == subj and main verb. Knowing is one of the verbs that introduces Indirect Statement.
Pueros, although in acc. case, it is subject in Ind. Statement.
Venire is Pres. Act. Inf is trans. as are coming.
So, ……..We know (that) the boys are coming. I will always say that. There is no word for that. In English we very often say that before the rest of the clause.
