COURSE Pre AP Chemistry INSTRUCTOR Mrs. Cheryl Graves Email cgraves@casciahall.org Web Page netclass.nymanet.org/netclassroom7 (to check grade book and assignments) o TEXT “Modern Chemistry” by Holt, Rinehart and Winston 2006 INTRODUCTION The Chemistry Course is designed to cover the basic facts of chemistry presented in a framework of laboratory experiments, textual material, and review and evaluation techniques. Students will be prepared to take AP Chemistry at the completion of this class OBJECTIVES Our first objective is to show students the importance of Chemistry in their major areas of study as well as in their daily lives. In addition, we want students to see not only that chemistry provides the basis for much of what goes on in our world but also that it is a vital, continually developing science. STRUCTURE First semester will cover Chapters 1-10 including matter, measurements, atoms, electron structure, periodicity, bonding, formulas, stoichiometry, reactions and gas laws. Second semester will cover Chapters 11-18 including topics such as liquids and solids, solutions, colligative properties, acids and bases, kinetics, equilibrium and redox. Chapter exams will be given for each chapter and at least one laboratory exercise per chapter completed. Homework will be given most evenings. Assignments will be given on my teacher web page each evening. GRADING Grades will be calculated on a total point system. Examinations will comprise 70% of the grade with laboratory reports, homework and quizzes making up the remaining 30%. All Lab reports must be computer generated and submitted on time. Tests will be given on Tuesdays. In case of absence on the Monday preceding the test, you will take the test on Tuesday (check the net for review). If you are absent on Tuesday, you will take the test on the morning after you return at 7:00am in Mr Gammill office and complete the test during activity period that day. If you are absent for more than one day, arrangements will be made individually. Students that qualify* for extra time will begin their test in Mrs. Clancy’s office at 8:20 am and will complete the exam during their normal classroom time. *Counselor Referral Grading Scale 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D Daily Requirements 1. Students must bring their own TI-30 or above scientific calculator to class each day. That calculator must have their name on it. TI-84 is recommended. 2. Students must furnish their own goggles labeled Z-87 for laboratory experiments. Again, goggles must be clearly labeled. Students can buy goggles at Dollar Tree. 3. Students must bring their own book each day, notebook, scientific calculator and pencil. 4. All assignments will be given on “Teacher Web” and Power Points will be on Shared Document of “Net Classroom”. It is the student’s responsibility to check the web each evening. Teacher Access I will be in room 40 everyday during break, Friday during study hall and almost everyday after school if an appointment has been made. If you are unable to complete your homework I strongly suggest you come for help before class. Many times it is easier to do your homework after school with me and get it completed.
