Homework

You are encouraged to read with your child nightly, ask questions about your
kindergartener's school day, and review work sent home.

Suggestions include:
1. Read both to and with your child. Ask questions when you're done to show
understanding and comprehension. Listening to you read also helps your child
as you model expression and fluency,
2. Study the Kindergarten Sight Word/Dolch Word lists regulary (They can be
found on the website.)
3. Look over graded papers together at home. (Be sure to stay positive as
little ones can be critical of their work. Remind them it is not expected to
be "perfect".)
4. The skills we are working on at school will be listed weekly on this
website. (You may find them under "Newsletter" tab). These may include
alphabet letter (and sound), shape, color, number, and others. You can
review these at home as well as when you are "out and about". (i.e. at the
store, bank, or park)
5. Have students practice verbal skills by telling you about their day. Ask
specific questions like "What did you make today?", What did you do in
Specials ?", "Did you like the book your teacher read?" "Who is a new friend
you played with?", "What was your favorite center activity?".
(Questions like "How was your day?" tend to encourage vague responses
like "fine".)

As well, students will be responsible for returning book buddies with reading
logs, take home folders and backpacks to school daily (even though folders
may not contain something every day). Establishing this routine is important
for your student. Thanks for your help.
