Greek Marketplace and Festival
The DCMS Agora will be held Friday, Dec. 16, from first through third
hours. The Agora celebrates Greek influence on Western civilization with
voluntary student participation in projects and games. It is a partial-day
activity for the sixth-graders' study of Chapter 8 on Ancient Greece.
In the re-created Agora or marketplace, there are food stands featuring
Greek-menu items including cookies and spice cakes, olives, fruit juices, pita
bread and dips, hummus, meatballs, baklava, gyros meat, and freshly-churned
butter. Also included is an area called the Tekton, for crafts. There are
demonstrations on how to wrap a toga, how to make comedy and tragedy masks,
and booths featuring jewelry, face painting, and print-outs of student names
using the Greek Alphabet.
In the Theatron, guest performer Albert Bostick performs scenes from
Aesop's Fables.
In the Athlon, games include Discus and "Javelin" (of the Nerf
variety).
